Recitations start this week. Much of the info below is discussed in my
video version of the syllabus.
There's one in-person section. The other sections are online via Zoom.
There's only one in-person recitation section for this class, Monday,
11:30 AM. It should show this on your class schedule.
All sections will get the same form of instructions and material.
I will say you need to have about 90% of questions answered before
recitation. Watch the pre-recorded videos, come to the Zoom lectures,
read the book and do problems. Then go to office hours and ask questions.
You can not expect the TA to go back over all the lecture material and
homework because you haven't had time to do so. If that's all you do you
won't succeed. We want you to ask questions. The TA will have something
prepared if you don't.
It is best to e-mail questions to your TA the night before your recitation.
That way they can prepare for them and it will mean they get through things
faster and cover more topics.
A total of 14 recitation activities consisting of attendance and take-home quizzes
will be given according to the schedule in the syllabus. You will get 5 pts for
attendance and 15 pts for each quiz. You must attend recitations. For online
recitations you must attend the Zoom meetings. The TA will check attendance.
Each week, except this week, you'll have a score for both attendance and a quiz
which will be combined to give the recitation score for the week.
For Wed. recitations the attendance this week will be applied to the week of
Nov 9, to go along with quiz 11.
For Fri. recitations the attendance this week will be applied to the week of
Nov 23, to go along with quiz 13.
Your lowest 3 activity scores will be dropped. No makeup assignments will be
provided for absences or missed assignment (a score of zero resulting from an
absence and missed quiz would be one of your dropped recitation scores).
As an example, lets say you're sick and can't recitation and take the quiz the
week of Sept 28 (Activity 5 and quiz 5). That would be a zero and one of your
drops.
The quizzes are "take-home" quizzes. My current plan is to post the quiz at
6 PM on Sat. It will be due the next day, Sunday, by 11:59 PM. It won't let you
submit if it's past that deadline and will be a zero. They will be graded for
completion. However, you must make a valid attempt at answering each
question showing all work or you won't get credit. If all you have is the correct
answer you won't get credit.
You need to work alone and the work you submit must be your own work and
not the work of someone else. You should not help someone else. You can not
post the questions. These can be considered academic misconduct.
I will put a "time limit" for a quiz. You should first take the quiz as if you're in
recitation being timed. See if you can work it and finish it. This will be the
best indicator of how well you know the material. Then if you weren't able to
answer questions within the time limit, hopefully you've allowed yourself enough
time to work on the problems you couldn't complete and turn it in on time.
The quiz will be a PDF file. You can download it into Notability on your iPad.
This is the best option. You can work it in Notability and then save it as a PDF.
You can also print it and write on it and then take pictures/scans and incorporate
them into a PDF. It can be a JPG but we prefer a single document. Then submit
the finished file to the drop box for the quiz. Make sure it's been uploaded correctly
by clicking the file.
This week there's a prequiz which covers 1210 material. We will grade it but it
doesn't count toward your final score. Just take it as a normal quiz and time yourself
and turn it in. Also, it gives you practice at doing this before you have actual
quizzes.
I think that's about it for now. It's getting late, or is it simply early for this day.
