You should have received my "Welcome" message.
If you are on the wait list you are also receiving this message.
It doesn't mean you got in the class.
This is just a quick e-mail because I'm getting a few questions
about the class and books required. Even if you have a textbook
you should take a quick look at info below.
This is what I know about the textbooks:
1) If you've taken 1210 or 1220 w/in the last year you should be able
get into Mastering via Carmen (MyLab and Mastering link - see below).
2) If it's been more than 1 year but you used the 13th or 14th edition and
need to move to the 14e edition you can contact the Pearson rep. Their
office hours and location are in Carmen.
3) If you need a new book and Mastering access the following info is per
the Pearson rep.:
A textbook is essential for success in this course. Your instructor will
be teaching from _Chemistry, The Central Science_ (*14**^th **edition*
*eText*)__by Brown, LeMay, Bursten, Murphy, Woodward, & Stoltzfus. This
interactive eText is available at the OSU Bookstore
<http://ohiostate.bncollege.com/>for $140 (price may vary), and includes
unlimited access for 48 months. Students are welcome to use an older
version of the printed text if they wish, but any accompanying online
homework system access must be purchased separately.

* this was the price in Au18. It may be different this semester but is
still cheaper.
** Access cards for MasteringChemistry purchased from locations/websites
other than those listed above (Amazon, etc) will not work for this course.
*
**NOTE:*In the paragraph above it mentions using a previous edition of
the textbook. However,
you need to purchase access to the MasteringChemistry on-line homework
and the eText comes
with that. Do NOT purchase a separate access code from other sources
other than the bookstore
or on Carmen. Also, the official textbook is the eText (this is
identical to the printed textbooks and
you can print a copy or buy a loose-leaf version - see instructions on
Carmen).
*NOTE: *We suggest you purchase this through the link in Carmen. It also
has an option to purchase
the *loose-leaf textbook *for *$44.95*.I know a lot of people still like
using an actual textbook rather than
having to read the eText. If you buy the eText/MC and the loose-leaf
version through Carmen the total
price is ~ $161.
You can get to MasteringChemistry by clicking on the "MyLab and
Mastering" link in the menu in Carmen.
4) Lab materials
*Lab Manual*: _Chemistry 12__20 General Chemistry Laboratory Manual_,
Hayden-McNeil Publishing, Inc.
/This is specific for each school year. Cannot use one from the past.
It should have 2019-2020
on the cover. /
*Lab Notebook*: _100 Page Student Lab Workbook_, Hayden-McNeil
Publishing, Inc.
5) We will be using MasteringChemistry for on-line homework. Access can be
obtained through your purchase of the proper bundle. Again, /*go through
Carmen*//*
*//*for this*/.
6) Do I suggest you buy the book on line or at the bookstore on campus?
We suggest you purchase via Carmen. It is the cheapest route. If
for some
reason you can't do it this way you can purchase it from the
bookstore.
7) Can you use earlier editions of the textbook for a hard copy?
Yes, you could. There aren't many differences between the editions
and I
will announce these in class and they will be on my web site for
the class (at the
"Notes" link). I also have end-of-chapter homework exercises
"assignments"
(highly suggested problems from the textbook) for 11th-14th
editions on my
class web page.
*HOWEVER*, you still have to purchase the proper access for Mastering using
the instructions above. The safest way is to just get access
through Carmen.
This will give you access to the MC on-line homework and the 14th
edition eText.
8) We are very particular on the calculators used during quizzes and exams.
Go to the following link,
https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/zellmer.1/calc.htm
Only two calculators are allowed, _TI-30XIIs or TI-30Xa_. No other
calculators
are permitted for use on quizzes or exams. /You MUST have _*ONE*_
of these two
models. Both are available at the bookstore. They are likely
cheaper at
off-campus locations (Target, Office Max, etc.)./
A TI-35, TI-36, TI-81, TI-86, etc. is not allowed.
We will not allow any other calculators, even if they are exactly
like one of the allowed ones.
We won't even allow simple bank calculators, cell phone
calculators, Google watch, etc.
Please do NOT tell us that you were allowed to use some other
calculator in another chem
courses. If you were, they were wrong to allow you to use it. It
will NOT be allowed in
this class.
I suggest you use the calculator you will use on the quizzes and
exams when you do your
homework. That way you will know how to use it when you take a
quiz or exam.
