Exp 3 (BAR), notebook, laptops during lab

The lab supervisor(s) may have addressed some of the following in
the announcements on Carmen.

Sometimes students want to put data directly into Excel and not
the notebook.   This is not allowed.  Also, do NOT write data
anywhere else but the notebook, in *PEN*.

The official record is the notebook.   ALL data collected in the lab
goes DIRECTLY in the notebook.   It should not be written on other
pieces of paper and then transferred to the notebook.   This has
been stated before in previous e-mails and the links dealing with
what goes in the notebook (which most of you read when you took
1210 and did exp 1).   We deduct points when you put data on other
pieces of paper, including the manual, even if you intend to transfer
the data to the notebook at a later time.   This then applies to first
entering the data into an Excel file and then transferring it to the
notebook.  It's really no different than transferring it from a spare
piece of paper to the notebook.  I've been to most of the labs at
this point and seen people writing in the manual, on other sheets of
paper and in the notebook in pencil.

This means it should not be entered in the laptop until you've put it in
the notebook.  You *must *put it in the *notebook *during lab.  If you have
time when you are *done *with the exp and everything is cleaned up and
your notebook sheets have been signed and the carbons submitted, you
can then enter the numbers in Excel.  Honestly, it's doubtful you'll have
time to do this in lab.   A Beer's Law graph, including calculating the
slope,
has to be done by hand in the notebook (for each student) before leaving
lab and checked by your TA.

However, each student needs to do this on their own.  You are collecting
the data as a group.  That is the last time you work together.
Everyone is supposed to produce their *own *Excel files, calculations,
graphs, etc.  You do *NOT *work on the data analysis or report as a
group.  You are not allowed to share your Excel files with anyone else.

Also, having laptops out during exp 3 can be problematic.   There's a
lot going on with this exp and a lot of stuff around.   There's not a
whole lot of room for laptops.

Finally, if your laptops are out they are big targets for spills. I would
imagine if you spill any of these chemicals on your laptop that wouldn't
be a very good thing for the laptop or you.   Even if your laptop survives
you will not be able to completely clean it of whatever spilled on and
in it.

This applies to tablets as well.
