I will be staying after class today for a short while to discuss the
exam grades (I won't have results) and to discuss what you can
do to improve your scores. If anyone then wants to meet privately
to discuss their actual scores so far in the class and grades we
can do that afterward, later today or tomorrow. If you can't stay
you are free to come by my office. The sooner the better, you
don't want to wait.
I stated in the e-mail last night to stop by and speak to me if you
got less than 60%. Just to allay your fears about not passing,
60% would be passing, probably borderline C-/C+. I choose the
60% threshold because I know for many majors or to transfer
a score back to another university a C- or better is usually
required (sometimes a C). Of course getting into a professional
school requires a much better performance.
I will warn you now, the material in chapters 16 and 17 is more
difficult for most people and the 2nd midterm won't be any
easier than the first. It will probably be a little more difficult because
the material is. On the other hand, if you can make the proper
changes you can still do well on it.
People can, and do, recover from a poor test grade. I've had plenty
of students do poorly on the first midterm and recover to get a
good grade (better than a C). Of course the actual letter grade
depends on your starting point on this first exam and the first couple
of quizzes. I just want everyone to realize a poor score on this
exam is not the end of it all.
