Some of you have e-mailed to say you didn't take 1210 here at OSU
and were wondering about the notebook.
Here's information for all of you.
For your notebooks you should be using *PEN *and all
data and information taken during lab should be *in *the
*notebook *and NOT the manual or another sheet of paper
*Do NOT write anything that should be in the notebook**
**in the manual or another paper, even if you intend to**
**copy it to the notebook before leaving lab. That is not**
**allowed. Any information taken during lab that is**
**pertinent to the lab goes directly in the notebook.*
Look at the following links:
*Chem Lab Notebook Exercise - Guidelines for Lab Notebooks*
<http://undergrad-ed.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/labnotebook/index.html>
*My Suggestions for Writing a Notebook Procedure*
<http://chemistry.osu.edu/%7Erzellmer/chem1220/notebook_proc_1220.pdf>
The second link is actually an example using exp 14. Note how
I took the first two steps in the procedure and rewrote them in
short concise easy to follow steps rather than in full sentence form.
You'll also find this on the last page of the syllabus.
*You **MUST* *sign and date each page and have the TA sign and date**
**the pages and you give your carbon pages to the TA before leaving lab.*
If you do not do this you will have to repeat the exp. If you haven't
finished the experiment let the TA know before leaving lab. You and
the TA will still sign your notebook pages and the TA will write incomplete
on the last page and you will still turn in the carbons.
You will NOT be allowed to begin the experiment without first having
the purpose and procedure written in your notebook. You will lose points
for the notebook if these are not done before coming to lab. You will lose
points for coming late to lab. Also, if you come w/o the procedure in
the notebook and have to do that you will be considered late.
Your reports can be typed but don't have to be. However, they should
be in *PEN*. Do *NOT *use *pencil*. These will be submitted on-line in
Carmen. See the lab syllabus for details. Since they are to be submitted
on-line it's probably easier to type them. Otherwise you have to scan
the parts you've written by hand and include them in your Word document
before it's submitted.
If you make a mistake in the notebook or report simply
put a single line through the mistake and write the correct
number, unit, etc. next to the data crossed out. *Do NOT**
**erase. Do not scribble over the mistake. Do NOT use
whiteout.
*We will deduct points for these things.
