I've been getting questions from students about due dates and such.
Most, if not all of these questions can be answered by reading the
syllabus and my previous e-mails and the links I sent or on my
web page. Here's a few things.
1) Beginning of Lab:
a) Put your goggles on when you enter lab.
b) Reports are turned in during the first 5 minutes before the
video starts. After that they will be considered late.
c) Open your notebook to the exp you'll be working on. The
TA will come down the rows while the video is playing
to check if your notebook is prepared. If it is not, they
will deduct the appropriate points. If less than 1/2 the
procedure is written you will lose 5 pts.
d) Videos start 5 min after the start of lab. If you come in after
the start of the video the TA may send you to 170 CE to watch
it in full. This will cost you time and you may then not finish
the exp. We won't give extra time to finish due to this.
The drawers remain closed until the video is finished. You are
not to work on anything until the video is finished and after the
TA has given you instructions.
2) During Lab:
a) The TA will check your notebook again more closely. They will
deduct points if it isn't readable and easy to follow and for
missing
units and incorrect sig. fig.
b) Clean up after yourself, particularly in the balance room.
3) End of Lab:
a) Properly dispose of your waste in the correct waste hoods. After
disposing of your waste in the large beakers in the hoods rinse
your
beakers a couple of times into the large beaker. Record your total
volume.
b) Clean up your area. TAs will deduct pts if you don't.
c) Sign your notebook. Have your TA sign and date the notebook.
If you aren't finished make sure you let the TA know. They will
write Incomplete on the last page.
Make sure you tear out the carbons and give them to the TA,
even if you didn't finish. If you don't give the TAs your carbons
you will have to redo the exp. You don't want to fall behind.
4) Reports:
a) Make sure you have a cover page. This is part of the report.
If not present the TA will deduct points.
b) Make sure you've attached the rubric as the last page. If this
is not
present the TA will deduct points.
c) Staple ALL the pages together. Make sure all the pages are
lined up in
the upper left corner. The report pages are smaller than
regular paper so
sometimes the staple will miss the corner of the report page
allowing it to
fall out. We don't accept reports which aren't stapled,
although the TA
doesn't always have the time to check. There's usually a
stapler in the lab.
If you don't staple the pages and any are lost it's not the TAs
fault.
There's links on Carmen about reports and I have an example stating
essentially
what should be in each section. I've e-mailed these links previously.
5) Graded Reports should be returned to you within a week after being
submitted.
If you've gone more than two weeks w/o getting your graded report
and the
grade is not in Carmen please e-mail the lab supervisor e-mail
address. This
doesn't necessarily apply to a report which isn't submitted during
the "normal"
period. TAs generally try to grade the reports for current
experiments and
sometimes extraneous reports get set aside. Even so, let me or
Nathan (assistant
lab supervisor) know by e-mailing the lab supervisor address.
