Welcome (back) to OSU for Spring Semester, 2015.
You are receiving this email because you are enrolled in a General
Chemistry course which has weekly labs. Spring Semester STARTS tomorrow,
Monday, January 12.
*NOTE:* *You will be expected to perform experiment 14 during your first
lab session. There will be handouts THIS WEEK if you have not purchased
your books. *
Carmen should be activated (if not email sutherland.118 at osu.edu). Please
note that there is a required quiz (on Carmen) on Academic Misconduct
that must be completed in order to get credit for your course. The due
date is on Carmen.
Please check your enrollment online since there may have been changes to
your assigned lab or recitation room. Students that are currently
enrolled will receive lab seating assignments during the first week of
classes. Unassigned lab seats will be given out on Tuesday, January 20,
starting at 8:00 AM (this is the only why to do section changes or adds
outside of Course Schedules on buckeyelink.osu.edu).
IF YOU FAIL TO ATTEND THE FIRST LAB SESSON - CONTACT THE GENERAL
CHEMISTRY OFFICE (GC_OFFICE at CHEMISTRY.OHIO-STATE.EDU) IMMEDIATELY. (This
also applies to students who enroll AFTER the first lab has met). NOTE
that you are responsible for making up any missed work - NO extra
make-up time will be provided.
IMPORTANT If you had Chemistry before on main campus, you should have
safety goggles. You will be expected to bring your goggles on the first
day of lab. Talk to your TA in lab if you do not have them. Students who
are taking a lab course on main campus for the first time (e.g. Chem
1210) are given new safety goggles. You will be expected to keep them
for any following courses. (Do NOT buy goggles at the bookstore - they
are the wrong kind.)
Each student must wear adequate clothing to reduce the possibility of
injury from chemicals or broken glass. Students who wear sandals or
shorts will be sent home - NO make-up time will be provided.
You will be expected to perform a laboratory experiment during your
first lab session [Expt 14] (check the day that lab meets on your
schedule), so make sure you have your laboratory manual and a properly
prepared notebook - purchase at a bookstore:
http://chemunder.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/courses/bookstoreslist.pdf
Only some experiments require complete reports - check the prelab
section on your syllabus.
Info on notebooks:
http://undergrad-ed.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/labnotebook/index.html
Info on reports:
http://undergrad-ed.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/labreports/index.html
You will receive another email describing the online prelabs and
post-lab data entry within a week.
Please check your syllabus for more details about lab policies. Lab
reports are due one week after completion (penalized 10% per day). You
must get 50% of total lab points to pass the course.
Normally one missed or partial lab may be completed in your assigned lab
time when your other work is finished (just talk to your TA). You may
contact me if you have specific questions about completing labs.
Regards,
Dr. Robert J. Zellmer
Acting General Chemistry Lab Supervisor
