Today's lecture, Tuesday's lab

So where was everyone during lecture today? I was there and got through
the syllabus
and all of chapter 11. I guess everyone has a lot of catching up to
do. Just kidding of course.
I was really surprised OSU canceled today. I just found out they've
closed for tomorrow,
as I suspected they would when they closed today.
Being closed tomorrow means those with Tuesday lab won't have lab.
Sunday night Dr. Tatz
and I discussed what we might do if this happened. I will let everyone
know what's going on
once I'm sure of what we will do about the experiments for Tuesday
labs. I will also update
the on-line syllabus.
Missing the recitation isn't a big deal. We were just going to have a
pre-quiz covering 1210
material. I would have liked everyone to take this so you would get
some idea of things
you need to know from 1210 for the start if this semester. Unfortunately
there's not enough
time in lab to do exp 14 and the pre-quiz. At the end of the week I
will be posting the blank
pre-quizzes and answer keys. If you didn't get to take the quiz in
recitation you can do it on
your own (using the time limit given on the quiz) and then compare it to
the answer key.
Next week we will have the first real quiz, which will be given at the
end of the recitation
period. Attendance will be taken. You will get 5 pts for attendance
but you will need to be
there the whole period to get full credit. If you show up late your
attendance points will be
reduced accordingly. I will warn you now, if you are not ready for the
quiz you won't finish
it or do well. There isn't a lot of time to ask questions in recitation
before the quiz so you
need to have 95% of your questions answered BEFORE you go to
recitation. That means
coming to office hours, mine and the TAs (you'll find them in 170 CE).
I want YOU to ask
the TAs YOUR questions so we get YOUR questions answered. We won't have
predetermined
activities. The TAs will be prepared to present things if there are no
questions but we want to
get your questions answered so if you have some ask the TA to go over
them. In order to be
well prepared you need to understand how to study (I'll explain this in
a follow-up e-mail).
Make sure you have an allowed calculator. Bring your calculators to
recitation on Thursday
(you will need them) and to lab (so the lab TA can check them).
Missing lecture today is a bit of a setback since this course requires
every bit of time I can get.
This means I will cover a limited portion of the syllabus in class. I
will assume most of you had
lab last semester. However, you may find some differences with
expectations this semester so
read the parts of the syllabus about lab carefully. We may wind up
covering some of the lab
portion of the syllabus in lab. Also, I have things on my class web
page about lab.
Make sure you read those.
Please note our midterms are on Thursday nights, 8:05-9:20. If you have
a class during the
times of the midterms there's no need to tell me now. The week before
the midterms I will
start making announcements in class about the exam and asking those with
university
conflicts to sign up for an alternate exam (a little earlier in the day,
usually around 4 or 4:30).
Technically we only have to make arrangements for those with conflicts
with university
classes or other exams. If you have a conflict with work you need to
try to make arrangements
now to get the time off for the exams. Don't wait until the last minute
to do this.
Due to missing Monday's lecture I may need to move a little faster,
particularly over some things
which are easier to pick up on your own from the book. I will make
these decisions as we go
along. Please read the chapter 11 before Wed. You should always be
reading ahead anyway
but normally I would tell you to just skim the materially. Try to read
it a little more thoroughly
before class this time.
I am working on answering all the e-mails I've received. It could take
awhile.
I will see you in class on Wed. (I hope).
