I'm getting an number of questions about the class and books
required. The syllabus, my class web pages and Carmen are
ready but I'm giving it one more check so there may still be
some minor changes. I will be sending out another e-mail
shortly with more information about the class. My home page is,

http://www.chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/

There you will find a link to our class page (which only has
the skeleton of what will be there at this point). You will find
other things as well. More will come later.

In the meantime, this is what I know about the textbooks:

1) Someone asked about the ISBN numbers for the textbook, lab manual and lab
notebook. You can find these things by going to the Barnes & Noble
web site
     (for OSU),

http://ohiostate.bncollege.com

     Click on "Textbooks".
Then click on "Select Term" (Fall).
Then click on "Select Department" (CHEM)
Then click on "Select Course" (1250)
Then click on "Select Section" (just chose the first one "17378")
     Then click on "Find Materials".

You will see the required books. Remember, the bundle they sell
(which they've
marked "required") is actually cheaper than the book itself. This
is only sold at the
OSU B&N. Actually, you might check the other campus bookstores.
They might
     also sell the bundle.

Technically you only need the textbook, lab notebook and lab manual.
     The ISBN numbers are:

         lab notebook (workbook) 2818440059247
         Chem 1250 lab manual 9780738057941
textbook (not the bundle) 9780321696724 (this you can probably
buy on the web)
Instead of this you could buy the text & student guide
2818440091360
Textbook, Student Study Guide, Mastering Chem, Periodic Table and
             3D glasses - 9781256799429

The "CHEMISTRY:CENTRAL SCIENCE" is the hardback book. It sells for
$246.65
(new) at Barnes and Noble but they do have used ones. You can also
rent this or get
an e-version (according to B&N's web site).
     The ISBN # is 9780321696724.

The "CHEMISTRY W/SG MASTER CHEM PERIOD&3D" is a bundle consisting of
the book (12th edition), study guide, Master Chem, a periodic table
sheet and 3-D glasses.
This sells through B & N for $233.20 (new). This is actually the
better deal because of a
special deal they have with OSU. They labelled this as "Required"
because it is the better
deal. It is not sold on line (at least I couldn't find it on
line). Since I won''t be using MC
you may not want to purchase this unless you want to use MC on your
own (see below).
This is the one which is listed as "required" but this package is
not required for this course.
     The ISBN # is 9781256799429.

There's a version with the book (custom edition - paperback) and
the Student Study
Guide. The SG may be useful. The price of this new is $157.35. I
would certainly
recommend this if it's been awhile since you've had chemistry but
the SG may be
useful for anyone (especially if you've had problems with chemistry
in the past).
     The ISBN # is 2818440091360.

There's just the Study Guide, which may be useful if you can find a
used book or can
get one from someone else. The ISBN # is 9780321704580.

It may be hard to find used copies of the 12th edition.

The only things that will be required will be the *textbook*, *lab
manual *and *lab notebook*.
However, the SG may be useful. You can purchase the Mastering
Chemistry separately
at some of the book stores or on line if you feel you need it, but
again this is NOT required.

2) I won't be using on-line homework using MC for credit. I don't
collect homework. I will
have MC set up for your use if you so chose to. There will be
tutorials and the end-of-chapter
problems. Whether you use MC or not you MUST do the
end-of-chapter problems I
assign (as well as understand the concepts in the reading) if
you hope to do fairly well. Most
who do really well do more problems than I assign.

3) Do I suggest you buy the book on line or at one of the bookstores on
campus?

I really can't answer this other than to say at this late date
ordering it on line may
result in not getting the book before the semester starts.

4) Can you use the 10th or 11th editions of the textbook?

Yes. There aren't many differences between the editions and I will
announce
these in class and they will be on my web site for the class (at
the "Notes" link).
I also have homework assignments for all three editions on my class
web page.

5) We are also quite particular on the calculators used during quizzes
and exams.
     Go to the following link,

http://chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/calc.htm

You MUST use one of the required calculators if you choose to use a
calculator
(highly suggested). There are 4 basic calculators you can use.
Your calculator must
have the numerals shown in the name of the calculator. I will use
the TI-30 in my
     discussion.

When we say "TI-30" that means something like a TI-30Xa, TI-30XIIS,
etc.
If you buy a TI the name of the calculator MUST have the numerals
"30" (and only
     those two numerals). A TI-35, TI-36, TI-81, TI-86, etc. is not
allowed. There
is actually one type of TI-30 we don't allow. If the name has
"TI-30" but also
has "Multiview" in the name it is not allowed.

The same general discussion applies to the other calculators
listed. If you buy a
Sharp it MUST have "EL-509" or "EL-531" in the name. If you buy a
Casio it
MUST have "FX-250" in the name.

We will not allow any other calculators, even if they are exactly
like one of the listed ones.
We won't even allow simple bank calculators, your cell phones, etc.
