cell phones in lab, lecture and recitation

I've been to a few labs this semester and in many of the labs I've found
at least one person with a cell phone out or on them.  We do NOT allow
cell phones in lab.  They need to be put away in your book bags.  You
shouldn't have them in your pockets or in the storage bins at your lab
station.  We want you paying attention to what you're doing.  Otherwise
you could make a mistake, have an accident, not finish the exp., etc.
If the TA sees you with your cell phone they will deduct points from
your lab grade.

What about cell phones in class?   I know how "important" it is to
always be connected to others now a days.   I would appreciate them
not ringing in class.   I'm not going to throw you out of class if it
happens
to ring but it will cause a momentary disruption.   Also, if you are texting
or surfing the web that's up to you but it may mean you miss something.
Contrary to popular belief, people are not all that capable of multitasking
and actually getting anything useful out of what you are experiencing.
Who knows, some day I may call on you in class and ask what I just said
or ask you a question and if you are busy with other things you may not be
able to answer because you weren't really listening.

The same applies to the review/quiz sessions.  No cell phones allowed.
They should be put away in your book bags.  We will allow iPads or
laptops during recitation, if they're being used to look at the textbook or
take notes.  If the TA sees you using them for something else they will
consider this the same as you not being there and deduct points.

Since I'm addressing recitation, please refrain from talking during
recitation.
If you don't understand something raise your hand and ask the TA.  I can
understand someone asking a neighbor what was just said because they
missed it.  However, continuously talking is disruptive to both the TA and
others around you.  You are suppose to be paying attention to what the
TA is saying and doing.
