MDM Observatory 2.4m Telescope Observing Report for 2025 Apr 03
Observer(s): L. Kay, E. Moran
Institution(s): Columbia
Instrument: CCDS
Worked for 8 hours (all night)
Conditions were Non-Photometric most of the night.
No equipment or software problems were encountered.
Seeing and Weather:
Beg: Seeing 1.5 arcsec, Clear, Winds Moderate
Mid: Seeing 1.5 arcsec, Clear, Winds Light & Variable
End: Seeing 1.5 arcsec, Clear, Winds Light & Variable
Observing Summary:
Dust levels were high all day but miaculously dropped enough for domes to open at
7:45. We opened and got our first standard star and were on a galaxy by 8:10 (18
degree twilight). Everything worked well, and the observers were efficient. Skies
were totally clear (not sure if it was photometric, but the conditions were excellent).
Seeing was good all night. We did something we've never
tried before -- offsetting the slit from the nucleus of a galaxy, then driving in Dec to
scan the object to simulate observations of it through a fixed aperture if it were at
greater distances. Worked beautifully. The dome shutter switches worked properly.
When closing, one of the mirror petals didn't shut, but it did on the second attempt.
We closed a little early because the RH was climbing over 80%.
