Our Kirwan Institute fall virtual forum series continues on November 2nd with Darwin Baluran , a Postdoctoral Scholar at The Ohio State University on the topic " The Relational Racialization of Docility and Danger: How Cues of Asian-ness are Read and Interpreted in Police-Citizen Encounters"


The presentation will highlight overlooked dimensions of race making in the criminal legal system by unpacking the racial dynamics between Asian-descent people and the police during involuntary police-citizen encounters. He analyzed data from in-depth interviews with 63 Asian-descent adults from across the United States, collected between 2020-2023, to unpack how race operates like a language, assigning differential status to citizens during involuntary police interactions. Stuart Hall explains that in the ‘system of meaning’ that is racism, the language of race relies on physical cues as “signifiers of an invisible code that writes difference” upon people’s bodies and regulate their behavior toward each other. Thus, he put in conversation the literatures in sociology of race, ethnic studies, and criminology to dissect how ‘cues of categories’ are read and interpreted to situate Asian-descent people along a spectrum of docility and danger during police encounters.
