Dear AIS Community ,

Join us for our next session of Our Unlearning Hour in which we celebrate the work of visiting Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin. We will meet on Friday March 3rd, 12:30-2pm at Hopkins Hall 480 & on Zoom (link below).

We will gather to engage with Obomsawin's work (she will not attend) ahead of her public events at the Wex (where she will be in attendance - see poster attached & details below), following our last session when we were joined by Layla Muchnik-Benali, Assistant Curator in Film/Video at the Wex, who is the host for Obomsawin's visit.

During Our Unlearning Hour, we will engage in a variety of ways with Obomsawin's iconic & inspiring work, including watching film clips & listening to audio clips, as well as possible processes of co-creation to welcome & demonstrate our shared appreciation for Obomsawin for visiting us & our community. Given that Layla has emphasized the importance of Obomsawin's film Trick or Treaty? (2014)<https://www.nfb.ca/film/trick_or_treaty/> which will be screened at the Wex on Saturday, we will center this work in our discussions. Here is a link to a useful learning guide/mini-lesson about the film: https://blog.nfb.ca/blog/2021/09/24/mini-lesson-for-trick-or-treaty/

One question we will focus on will be: what does it mean for us - Indigenous & non-Indigenous - to be treaty people, specifically at a US Land-Grant/Grab institution like OSU? (See this page on the Oregan State University (the other OSU!) website for some ideas: https://diversity.oregonstate.edu/we-are-all-treaty-people). I also wanted to share this article & video about the work The treaty is in the body (2017) by Alutiiq artist Tanya Lukin Linklater https://www.cbc.ca/arts/exhibitionists/tanya-lukin-linklater-s-art-explores-what-it-means-to-be-treaty-people-1.4590955

I hope you can join us!

The Wex events during Obomsawin's visit include:

  1. A student-focused filmmakers dialogue with Obomsawin at 4-5pm - here is the link to sign up - do share with any students who would find it interesting & note that while others are welcome - OSU Faculty & community members, the event is a space to prioritize student questions & dialogue with the artist: https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eqWgiNhsvxDDJMa
  2. A reception catered by NAICCO at 6-7pm in the Wex
  3. A screening, followed by Q&A of Obomsawin's film Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance
