Dear AIS community,

On behalf of Our Unlearning Hour, I am delighted to share an informal welcome & drop-in on Friday Feb. 10 at 9:30-10:30am in the Heirloom Cafe at the Wex with guests Navajo, Creek & Greek artist & professor, Anna Tsouhlarakis<https://www.naveeks.com/> & two:spirit African-American and Haudenosaunee (Mohawk/Tuscarora) artist, & writer M. Carmen Lane<https://mcarmenlane.com/>.

The occasion is the opening of Anna Tsouhlarakis' exhibition at the Wex called The Native Guide Project: Columbus later that day - more info here: https://wexarts.org/exhibitions/anna-tsouhlarakis-native-guide-project-columbus

As many of you know, Our Unlearning Hour originated in Fall 2019 as part of the K’acha Willaykuna: Andean & Amazonian Indigenous Arts & Humanities Collaboration<https://globalartsandhumanities.osu.edu/research/kacha-willaykuna> Discovery Theme project & has met every week since (including online through the heights of the pandemic). I created this space along with Michelle Wibbelsman<https://sppo.osu.edu/people/wibbelsman.1> (SPPO) & our collaborators to emphasize decolonial methods and unlearning processes entailed by centering the work of Indigenous artists within a settler colonial institution.

Starting this semester, we are continuing this shared work, while also working in close collaboration with local Two Spirit (Southern Ute, Non-Enrolled) Afro-Indigenous artist and educator Indigo Gonzales Miller<https://igonzalesarts.com/about-me>, to pivot to this being an informal space to welcome and celebrate visiting Indigenous artists to OSU and Columbus, in coordination with the American Indian Studies Program<https://americanindianstudies.osu.edu/> and the Center for Ethnic Studies<https://ethnicstudies.osu.edu/>.

We are now meeting twice a month (not weekly), on the 1st and 3rd Fridays at 12:30-2pm (yes, more than an hour!) in Hopkins Hall 480 and on Zoom (https://osu.zoom.us/j/9724043349?pwd=SllpSUNhLzNqZWhDVkF3aEtDa2g3Zz09; Meeting ID: 972 404 3349; Password: 409616).

Please drop by and welcome Anna Tsouhlarakis & M. Carmen Lane with us & then on Friday Feb. 17th, join us for our next session of Our Unlearning Hour.

Best wishes,

Richard

“I’d like to begin by acknowledging that we are on the traditional lands of many Indigenous cultures. Most recently, home of the People of the Eastern Woodlands, who migrated into the Ohio Valley after European Contact: The Shawnee Wyandotte, Delaware, Miami, Ottawa, Peoria, Potawatomi, Seneca-Cayuga, Chippewa, among others; And the Ancients, known by their monuments: the people of the Adena, Hopewell, and Fort Ancient cultures.” - Marti Chaatsmith (Comanche Nation citizen, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma descendant and Associate Director of the Newark Earthworks Center), acknowledgment.
