[ACVM] Dr. L Garry Adams chosen as this year's ACVM Distinguished Microbiologist

Hi all,

It is my pleasure to announce this year's ACVM Distinguished Microbiologist of the Year, Dr. L. Garry Adams. Dr. Adams is a Senior Professor of Veterinary Pathobiology at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A & M University (TAMU).  Dr. Adams has a long and distinguished career studying zoonotic organisms, host:pathogen interactions, and molecular pathogenesis of infectious disease.  His accomplishments are too numerous to list but excerpts from his nomination letters (below) reveal how far-reaching his impacts on veterinary microbiology extend.  Please join me in congratulating Dr. Adams.

>From Dr. Tamara Gull:
Dr. Adams has had a storied career in international veterinary medicine, publishing well over 200 scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals; conducting research as a Visiting Professor in Germany and Canada; and collaborating with dozens of researchers in Kazakhstan, South Africa, Russia, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia and Egypt, among others.  He has substantively contributed to animal health and regulatory programs for brucellosis, salmonellosis, and mycobacterial infections throughout that time. His expertise in the area of veterinary microbiology resulted in invitations to serve on National Research Council activities of the National Academies of Sciences including the Committee on the Department of Defense's Programs to Counter Biological Threats, the Committee on Biodefense at the U.S. Department of Defense, and as a member of the 2017 National Academy of Science Committee that wrote the "Revisiting Brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Area" report.
In addition to his extensive research accomplishments, Dr. Adams has skillfully guided and inspired 154 graduate students, hosted 11 visiting scientists, and mentored dozens of postdoctoral researchers.  He previously served as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Texas A & M University.

Dr. Adams has served the veterinary profession in many ways, first as a veterinarian working in Central and South America and later as a dedicated professor and talented administrator. He has served on numerous national and international committees and advisory boards. Dr. Adams is a leading expert on biodefense and prevention of foreign animal diseases, which lead Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH-NIAID, to invite him to serve as a member of the NIH NIAID Blue Ribbon Panel on Bioterrorism and Its Implications for Biomedical Research. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences' National Research Council Standing Committee on BioDefense for the U.S. Department of Defense.
Although Dr. Adams' curriculum vitae is lengthy and impressive, neither it nor this letter can truly do justice to his impact on the veterinary science. He has made a career of discovery and breaking new ground. His lasting legacy, though, is his impact on the lives of his students, colleagues, and friends and the relationships he continues to build. To his students, colleagues, and community, he continues to provide new knowledge about animal and human health and to provide an example of conscientious dedication to his craft and profession.
