Director, Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory (TVDIL) located in Tifton, Georgia. The TVDIL Director is responsible for all operational activities of the laboratory including budget development and management, supervision of professional and technical staff, and management of the quality program. The TVDIL Director works closely with the Head, Department of Pathology and the Director, Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in coordinating veterinary diagnostic activities across Georgia and in interacting with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, other state diagnostic laboratories, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) & other state and federal agencies. The Director reports to Head of the Department of Pathology.

The successful candidate must have a DVM degree or equivalent, advanced training or board certification in veterinary anatomic or clinical pathology or in veterinary microbiology/virology, a broad knowledge of diagnostic laboratory disciplines and evidence of strong communication, administrative, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Administrative experience is desirable. The successful candidate will hold a clinical or tenure track faculty position in the department appropriate to his or her specialty discipline, and an academic rank commensurate with his or her experience. The Director is expected to actively participate in service activities. The division of service and administrative responsibilities is roughly 50 – 50.
The UGA Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory is a full service, AAVLD accredited, NAHLN tier 2 laboratory with biopsy, clinical pathology, necropsy, virology/serology, microbiology, and molecular biology sections. It has six faculty and 27 staff and an annual operating budget of about $3 million. Laboratory personnel maintain close working relationships and participate in collaborative research projects with other University of Georgia personnel stationed in Tifton [approximately 400 Coastal Plain Experiment Station employees (85 faculty) and 80 Cooperative Extension employees (40 faculty)] and with other College of Veterinary Medicine personnel in Athens, GA. Also located in Tifton is Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (~5,000 students). Tifton is a progressive community with a great deal of civic pride and enthusiasm. Tifton has an appealing climate and is located in the heart of the agriculturally-productive coastal plain, just 130 miles from both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
