Dave:
I think this sounds great. You have facilitated the use of the ACVM listserv exactly as it was envisioned several years ago when we started! Thank you.

Jim

Amelia's, Deep's, and Jim's posts illustrate what I was thinking perfectly. I was going to propose a two-pronged approach where subject matter experts write up an emerging issues position that we could discuss/edit/approve within the College, and then we have a bank of identified SME's that we can go to for current issues as they arise. To use MERS as an example - coronavirus folks knew that emerging coronas were likely to be a problem at some point in the future, but I don't think anyone predicted SARS, and even with that precedent no one predicted MERS. So, we could have a statement that outlines emerging viral (bacterial, parasitic, or even immunologic?) issues and existing data, and how specific viruses might fit the bill (arboviruses in the Caribbean coming to America and Climate Change, Lyssaviruses in Bats, Bats and everything else, etc. etc.) and post those, and then supplement with emerging issues statements that draw from those general positions as they come up ( with a short turn around). In a perfect world, the two statements would line up in that a prediction would be fulfilled, and the specifics of the issue could just be laid out in a shorter statement...

I also agree that statements from organizations are rolled out more quickly than from individuals because of various institutional clearance requirements, so I'd like a BoG review and then a statement like "the leadership of the ACVM issued this informational statement to facilitate public discourse on this issue. The views expressed herein are scientifically informed but do not necessarily represent the entire membership of the ACVM."

How does that sound as a model?
Thanks
Dave

Greetings all!

We all must also have to deal with Press Dept./clearances while commenting on topics of national importance. A group statement is always easier to put out as a consensus statement by the experts.

I don't think I got my 2 cents in for AIV- preparedness and whether or not we will see AI. With preparations this year, we surely are little better prepared today in responding to the same issue if we see a repeat for AI or for that matter any other infection. I am also in the camp of virus not showing again this year but we are not dropping our guard. Problem we have with AI is we have lot of low path H5 that circulates in US and with antigenic shifts and drifts it can easily acquire higher pathogenicity.

On EHV-1 we didn't have any other horses go pos beyond the first barn, so it appears it's contained thus far. In my opinion, viral loads, clinical symptoms and recovery tied to EHM is not fully understood as to what factors beyond viral strain determine the final outcome for this infection. I believe host factors have significant role to play but we don't yet know what those are.

Best,

Deep Tewari

Diplomates -
Two messages ago, I suggested that we start posting statements from the ACVM on issues of concern, and there were a couple of supportive statements. However, how do we do that? One way is to have a list of subject matter experts that can be tapped as issues come up, call for volunteers, or just encourage people to put information out for comment on the listserv that can be vetted by the membership and then turned into an informational statement? As a starting point, would people be willing to submit information on their area(s) of expertise? Or would it be better to call for volunteers on an as-needed basis?

Does anyone want to volunteer for an AIV statement? Would we comment on something like equine Herpesvirus, if it's only a local outbreak? http://www.promedmail.org/post/3906119
Thanks
Dave
