[ACVM] Informational Statements - call for volunteers?

Dave, thanks for bringing this up again. I think we should create a list of subject matter experts that the communications committee could contact to ask for a statement to post on the website  when a "hot button" issue comes up.  To make creation of the list simple, the subject  areas  could be defined rather broadly-- say, swine virology, wildlife parasitology...etc.  

We just need to decide if we are OK with having one of our members put a statement on the website if the entire membership hasn't approved  it.   If we're going to do this, I think the statements  need  to go up within a few days of national reporting of some relevant issue, because when there is an issue of public concern, the public will  be looking for information immediately--and probably not in several  weeks.   If the point  of this is to improve recognition of the value of ACVM and ACVM Diplomates, we should  get a statement up in a timely fashion, and this would probably not allow  for College-wide approval before the statement is posted.

However, I'm aware that some Diplomates may be uncomfortable with a  single  person appearing to speak for the  whole  college...when in fact all  Diplomates may not agree with any  given Diplomate's statement.  

Perhaps we could ask a Diplomate with relevant expertise  to write  an informative  statement, we could run it by the BOG for approval, and then  post it with a footnote  that says something like the statement  may not necessarily reflect the views  of all ACVM Diplomates.

Diplomates -
Two messages ago, I suggested that we start posting statements from the ACVM on issues of concern, and there were a couple of supportive statements. However, how do we do that? One way is to have a list of subject matter experts that can be tapped as issues come up, call for volunteers, or just encourage people to put information out for comment on the listserv that can be vetted by the membership and then turned into an informational statement?  As a starting point, would people be willing to submit information on their area(s) of expertise? Or would it be better to call for volunteers on an as-needed basis?

Does anyone want to volunteer for an AIV statement? Would we comment on something like equine Herpesvirus, if it's only a local outbreak? http://www.promedmail.org/post/3906119
