[ACVM] coronavirus question from a listserve

I'm not aware of reports in equines but will keep my eyes and ears wide open. I would be interested in acquiring isolates or tissues from infected horses if they exist. Do we have any indication of organ systems involved (respiratory or enteric or both?) Regards to all, Steve Krakowka

To date, the Diagnostic Virology Laboratory at NVSL has not been involved with or identified coronavirus from ill horses. I am not aware of any controlled studies with equine coronaviruses but have also heard reports of associations between coronaviruses and disease in horses.

Subject: FW: coronavirus question from a listserve
Have any of you been involved with evaluating cases of acute febrile disease +/- gastrointestinal signs in adult horses, with fecal coronavirus shedding identified in these horses? There has been some discussion of such cases among veterinary internists I know, and I¹ve wondered what the vet microbiology community makes of this. Basically I¹ve been a bit skeptical that coronavirus is the cause of these signs, but I¹ve never been directly involved with a case. I also haven¹t found any reports of experimental challenge studies leading to typical disease in adult horses.
Is anyone aware of such work?

Thanks for any information.
