<html><head></head><body><div style="color:#000; background-color:#fff; font-family:verdana, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:13px"><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr"><br></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr"><span id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_28329">I've visited the new Hogarth House -- or rather, Suffield House, which is the one that's been prepared for sale, and had a meeting in that 'amazing kitchen'. </span>The whole building is now Hogarth House, and the two houses are named 'Leonard' and 'Virginia'. The building has a chequered history, beginning in 1750, when it was built (Leonard Woolf was told 1720). Rather inappropriately, Hogarth was the national headquarters of the British Union of Fascists in 1934/5, and Suffield was owned from the 1930s to 1970s by the Conservative Association: I was shown a basement room where they had their own private pub, according to a local resident. During this development, the basement has been deepened to extend the floor-to-ceiling height. </div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr"><br></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr">It is all very luxurious, and in muted greys, the polar opposite of what it must have been in the Woolfs' time. It's very well located and I suppose would attract a well-heeled buyer wanting somewhere within reach of London, but with a semi-rural feel. Unfortunately, I think the reason it's still on the market is something they can't do anything about: the lack of garden space at front or back. Leonard Woolf recalls a 'good sized garden' in Beginning Again, but most of this has been sold off and only a small courtyard remains.</div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr"><br></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr">I'm preparing an article about the history of Hogarth House for the Virginia Woolf Bulletin, using a report prepared by the historical architect employed to do background research before redevelopment began. It's mostly his work, so I'm not being immodest when I say it's fascinating.</div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr"><br></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1520496734684_25439" dir="ltr">Sarah M.
