When I was a student in, <br clear="none">say,<br clear="none">1968, and if I had known that Leonard Woolf opened his garden to the public <br clear="none">for<br clear="none">charity, I would have tried to find out how to get to Rodmell from London<br clear="none">SW20, and made the trip, and – d’you know? – it wouldn’t have been any *use*<br clear="none">to me at all. Perhaps that’s why I got a crap degree.<br clear="none"><br clear="none">"You might not expect college freshmen to understand that careers don’t<br clear="none">proceed in straight lines, but surely their parents ought to." How<br clear="none">wonderfully middle-class! My mother didn't even know what a mezzanine was<br clear="none">or what anticlockwise meant or how to read a bus timetable: "All this fuss<br clear="none">about education.
