me to remove all my Americanisms--the frequency and number of which, apparently,
shocked them. I had to let them know that, in fact, I had no way to know what
was an Americanism, being American, and that they needed to do that on my

usage). Since then, I've despaired of the kind of care that one used to rely
on. I make many errors. I couldn't get any writing done at all if I were

while composing tend to persist, and there is no longer a stage where one
can rely on an editor.
