in France (on the Continent generally?) open(ed) outwards, while in the UK they
opened inwards. Is this true? If so, then “burst open” sounds more
appropriate for French french windows. </font></div>

opened inwards, but in our current house (built 1999) they open outwards,
although, because of the various catches, you can’t “burst [them]
open”.</font></div>
