Dear Woolfians

Zadie Smith was on the French "cultural" radio France Culture this morning.
I was startled and jumped!

Asked what she was reading, and how, ZS answered that she had made it an
exception recently to exclusively read VW's Diaries since... last September
(2023). She confessed having *just* finished reading All 5K pages.

The lessons? Read, read and read, as VW did -
say "Jane Austen when you feel you're not intelligent enough", reading all
other people's books to be able to write. All types of books, incl.
journalism. VW as a model reader, writer to a modern writer who does not
feel she herself is a great writer for the ages.
Latest title: *The Fraud *(*L'imposture*, Paris: Gallimard, May 16, 2024).

An interesting, vivid, unusual interview, where VW is a key figure. Easy to
follow in French but the French interpreter will hide her voice if bits and
pieces of ZS's voice in English can be heard in the background.

All best wishes,

Marie-Claire
