Well, I've had string bags for years, in various colors! They fit nicely in a pocket for when you're out and about. They used to be very common in Europe too, especially around farmer's markets to carry vegetables, because they expand. No leather on mine, just string.

Here is my string bag (hanging from some door handles). Well, it was my aunt?s and from the 1950s or 60s. The handles are a soft leather.
