As others have noted, it is the 1992 Penguin edition (i.e. with Hermione Lee?s intro and Stella McNichol?s editing, although the latter seems to have been more or less disappeared) with a new cover by Alison Bechdel, and a Foreword by Patricia Lockwood. I am picking up this thread again because in the front matter, the publisher states: ?This edition is collated from all known proofs, manuscripts, and impressions to reflect the author?s intentions, and includes a catalogue of emendations ?.? (the latter presumably referring to McNichols?s two appendices). I suppose it is too much to expect someone who thinks Ramsay is spelled Ramsey to understand that ?author?s intentions? is a woefully out of date term in current textual editing practices, but this note also misrepresents what McNichol explains she has done in her transparent editing of the text of the novel. But publishers (and apparently Woolf?s copyright holders) don?t trouble themselves with such picky scholarly details. VW wrote in ?Three Guineas?: ?Consider, even at the risk of a digression, what effect this proposed wage for those whose profession is marriage and motherhood would have upon the birth rate, in the very class where the birth rate is falling, in the very class where births are desirable?the educated class.? VW?s sister-in-law, Bella, married the botanist and geneticist Robert Heath Lock (1879?1915), Assistant/Acting Director of the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens near Kandy in Ceylon. His then-well-regarded book, "Recent Progress in the Study of Variation, Heredity, and Evolution", first published in 1906, revised editions 1909 & 1911, was revised after his death by Leonard Doncaster with a preface and a biographical* note by Bella. Practically unchanged from the 1st edn is the following: Professor Karl Pearson [a ?scientific racist?, according to Wikipedia] has lately shown how the low birth-rate of the professional and middle classes ? the classes amongst which the intelligence of the nation is to a large extent segregated ? leads to the recruiting of these classes from amongst the lower and less intelligent strata of society. In other words, a steady breeding out of intelligence is taking place. Recognising that intelligence is an important factor in national greatness, we proceed to remedy this defect by endeavouring to reduce the infant mortality among the less desirable classes, and by offering every inducement to the production of large families by the lower strata of society; indeed, we propose to remove from them all responsibility for the production of children, and to feed and house the latter as we already educate them at the expense of the State. (p. 324) (Well, they could have started by providing birth-control information to the lower classes.) The recent focus on the personal and literary competition between Mansfield and Woolf is averted in turning toward their mutual appeal to Chinese readers and critics. At the same time that architects, fashion designers, gardeners, department stores began to create their orients manifested in ?chinoiserie,? the writers Katherine Mansfield, Ling Shuhua and Virginia Woolf were involved in a similar kind of aesthetic exchange, reading, imagining, and culturally translating each other as they walked across the narrow bridge of art to engage in more complex understandings and experiments with China and Japan. They read and refracted one another through the contexts of their own histories and imaginations, and created, long before it was fashionable, a transnational literary conversation. It removes Virginia Woolf and Bloomsbury from the postcolonial charge of xenophobia, snobbism, imperialism, collusion with Empire and the indictment of modernism; it removes Shuhua and other Chinese writers from the Socialist critique of their ?decadent Western-identified positions? or attraction to the workings of the imagination, romanticism or fantasy as being more ?real? than the prevalent Chinese literary dogma of the time?socialist realism?; it removes Mansfield and Woolf from focus on personal insults and competition. ? Contrapuntal perspectives,? described by Edward Said, emerge: parallel or discrepant, sympathetic or oppositional. But the importance, methodologically, is that they play off each other in literary and cultural relief, dramatizing perspectives that would otherwise remain hidden. This literary play with its own fanciful and imagined Chinas and Englands occurs alongside the emerging visual and cultural chinoiserie. > excerpt, Laurence, "Shared Affinities: Katherine Mansfield, Ling Shuhua, > and Virginia Woolf" in *Chinoiserie and Modernism *(2015) Pat Laurence Professor Emeritus City University of New York On Mon, Jun 19, 2023 at 11:37?AM Neverow, Vara S. via Vwoolf < vwoolf at lists.osu.edu> wrote: > ? But there's this line in ?Old Bloomsbury?, two or three pages in: ?Here then seventeen or eighteen people lived in small bedrooms with one bathroom and three water-closets between them?. This seems more realistic because it includes the servants, some of whom who were more permanent residents than the family (the men would be at work during the day; the male children were away at school and later university; Laura was sent away; Stella married). You'll see that Woolf isn't exact about the larger figure; perhaps she should have stuck to being vague when counting her family members too. Sarah Sarah M. To this end, we will examine and read Virginia Woolf's literature, compare her work to other writers' works and investigate the journey of her works in Turkey. We know how important scholarly collaborations and networks are, so every Woolfian is welcome. We would be pleased if you would like to join our team, share your ideas for talks, blog writings, and/or projects on Virginia Woolf and her connection to Turkey. As the first event of our Society, we are going to have an online talk by Dr Lee Okan from Lesley University. The title of her talk is "Time's Fluidity: Analyzing Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando' through Henri Bergson's Philosophy of Duration". You are warmly invited to this online event which will be held on 04.07.2023 at 19.00 pm (TR time). In this talk we are going to explore the use of time and its intertwining with gender and identity, particularly in relation to Henri Bergson's theories of time and duration with Dr Okan. Join us to see how Woolf defies traditional conceptions of time! Please find attached the poster for Dr Okan's talk. The event will take place online via Zoom. In this online talk, Marielle will explore the complex and profound relationships between Virginia and Leonard Woolf and Margaret Llewelyn Davies. As lifelong friends the trio had great influence on one another both personally and politically. However, there were tensions within Margaret and Virginia's friendship, particularly regarding Virginia's novel, *Night and Day* (1919) ? Margaret possibly inspired the character of Mary Datchet ? and Woolf's introductory letter to *Life as We Have Known It* (1931). Marielle O?Neill is a doctoral researcher at Leeds Trinity University. Her research explores the political activism and partnership of Leonard and Virginia Woolf. She has worked in local and national politics in the UK and US, and is now pursuing academic research informed by her experience in politics. Mark Hussey is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Pace University, New York. As the official Society in Turkey, our overall aim is to expand Woolf scholarship in Turkey, and create productive and supportive collaborations. As the first event of our Society, we are going to have an online talk by *Dr Lee Okan* from Lesley University. The title of her talk is *"Time's Fluidity: Analyzing Virginia Woolf's 'Orlando' through Henri Bergson's Philosophy of Duration"*. You are warmly invited to this online event which will be held on *04.07.2023 at 19.00 pm (TR time)*.
