Thanks Stuart (as you can tell, I am too lazy at the moment to do my own looking things up!).

No, the Adams copy was never at Sydney U.  His copy, which he had had for years, was known about.  See his p. 265 in the 2nd edn of the Bibliog (1967) opp. p. 3, and the details supplied by him on p. 4. Adams’s copy was sold at Sotheby’s on 6 Nov 2001: "The Library of Frederick B. Adams, Jr - Part 1: English & American Literature" (Sale L01910U), p. 53, item 82 (illustration of pp. 264-5 on p. 52) – for £80,000 (not inc. buyer’s premium). Stuart From: mhussey at verizon.net Sent: Friday, July 21, 2023 3:18 PMTo: 'Stuart N. Thanks Stuart. This very helpful. But is it the case that the Adams copy was at one point at U of Sydney, or is that an old error in the record? Perhaps, given what you say, it is the Adams that’s in private hands now?

So, is this the Frederick B. Adams copy (which Louise DeSalvo thought had been sold in the mid-1970s by Bow Windows in Lewes)? James Haule located it at the Fisher Library at U of Sydney. Does anyone know anything more about the copy held in a private collection?  I expect the editors of the forthcoming (eventually…) CUP edition will need to sort all this out! Haule, DeSalvo and others all have interesting speculations about the complicated publication history of the 1920 US edition.

Hi Christine and all, See Haule's essay ("VW's Revisions of The VO: Some New Evidence," TCL, 1996), mentioned in the article, for the trajectory of the copy. I think he got to look at it before it got mislaid. Best, Helen From: Vwoolf
