The themes of her work, exploring sexuality, anxiety and existentialism, were as controversial as her life, in which she changed country several times and took many lovers of both sexes. She died of tuberculosis in 1923, leaving much of her work unpublished. Subsequently collated and edited by John Middleton Murry, it has come to be regarded as a landmark in the development of modernism in English. While I?m thrilled to be hosting our first in-person conference since 2019 at Florida Gulf Coast University, there are many access barriers to conference attendance, and those barriers have been amplified during our ongoing pandemic. Hybrid conferences are difficult to manage, and I am unfortunately not equipped to organize a conference in a hybrid modality. However, I am collaborating with the IVWS to pilot a Fall Symposium that will be a virtual sibling to the 2023 conference. The symposium will share the 2023 theme, ?Virginia Woolf & Ecologies?; conference and symposium presenters alike will be invited to submit their papers to the selected proceedings for the 32nd Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf; and the wonderful Derek Ryan has already agreed to give the keynote for this fall event. Our hope is that pairing the in-person conference with a later virtual symposium might be a sustainable way to lower some participation barriers and to model options for inclusivity beyond a hybrid format. There's plenty of scope for papers on Woolf, including her transformations of the Victorians. The conference will have a particular emphasis on Charlotte M. Yonge whose bicentenary falls this year (and whom Woolf read whilst on honeymoon in 1912), so we'd also welcome papers on Yonge and other women writers. Best wishes Jane CALL FOR PAPERS Victorian Transformations 24-25 May 2023 Weetwood Hall Conference Centre, Leeds (UK), and online Hosted by Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies in collaboration with the Charlotte M. Yonge Fellowship Keynote Speakers: Professor Helen Small and Professor Talia Schaffer The Victorian age was characterised by social, technological, scientific, religious, and cultural transformation. As we have lived with the Victorians, our view of them has in turn transformed, with the concept of 'transformation' itself proving mutable. This conference will engage with the idea of transformation both as applied to the Victorians, and in Victorian Studies. Taking a thoroughly interdisciplinary approach, the conference seeks to explore both the changes taking place in society and personal consciousness during the long nineteenth century, and the changing constructions and interpretations of the Victorian age. Organized as a collaboration between the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies (LCVS) and the Charlotte M. Yonge Fellowship (CMYF), the conference coincides with the bicentenary of the novelist Charlotte M. Yonge (1823-1901). It is intended that she will feature prominently in the discussions, as a writer whose exceptionally long literary career captured the many changes of the period, and whose reception history has been so suggestively varied. Once seen as a writer with 'true realist chique' (Henry James, 1865), she was later disparaged as old-fashioned and off-puttingly religious - even 'fanatic' (Q. D. Leavis, 1944) - before enjoying something of a renaissance in the twenty-first century. How and why have readings of her work changed, and how might a revisionary approach transform our view of 'the Victorian'? Proposals for 20-minute papers are sought, from scholars working in all disciplines and at all career stages, on topics including but not limited to: * Transformations in the field of Victorian Studies: shifting attitudes to 'the canon'; sea changes in scholarly approaches; changing conceptions of the Victorian in dates and places; changing critical assessments of specific authors, novels, or genres * Nineteenth-century writers, artists, and poets whose careers spanned several decades: how do they react to and represent 'transformation'? * Personal 'transformations': Victorian figures whose political, social, religious or ethical views underwent 'transformation', in autobiography or their fiction * Textual 'transformations': writers, publishers, readers and critics of Victorian form * Reflections on the Victorian formation of disciplines * Movements that have transformed the critical landscape * Spaces and places: decentring transformation, global histories, landscapes, cities, countrysides, 'Great' houses, or other buildings 'transformed' * Acts of imaginative 'transformation': theatrical, artistic, cinematic adaptation * The 'transformed' body: fashion, dress reform, changing notions of sex and sexuality * Political, legal, and institutional 'transformations': legacies of systems, structure and infrastructure, disciplinary regimes * 'Transformations' of science, engineering and technology: new positions on facts and artefacts, constructions of 'the inventor', failed futures * Change and continuity in faiths, religious beliefs and attitudes * Changing constructions of the Victorian during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, in fiction, art, the media and the heritage industry * How current responses to 'race'/colonialism/climate change/gender/sex /(dis)ability might be 'transformed' by reference to the Victorians * Changing priorities and policies of organisations such as the Victorian Society, the National Trust, the Historic Churches Fund, English Heritage * All aspects of the life, work, and reception history of Charlotte M. Yonge Abstracts of maximum 250 words should be sent to LCVS at leedstrinity.ac.uk by 31 January, 2023. Proposals for panels of papers are also welcome. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I had assumed that the idiom had not crossed the Atlantic because there are no crickets in the UK, but Google tells me that there are. I guess that the idea is that the silence is so deafening (another idiom) that you can hear the crickets. Two additional bits of trivia. Buddy Holly's group was named The Crickets ? and the Beatles reported that this inspired the name of their group. When Holly's first album, "The Chirping Crickets," was recorded, there was a live cricket chirping in the studio that eluded attempts to catch it. Its chirping can be heard as the song "I'm Gonna Love You Too" fades out. And finally: did Walt Disney know that "Jimminy Cricket!" was a euphemism for "Jesus Christ!"? I always understood that he was quite devout and strait-laced, so this has puzzled me. Chase of the Wild Goose was first published by Virginia and Leonard Woolf?s Hogarth Press in 1936 and has been out of print since the early 1940s. Lurid?s new edition is graced with an afterword by publishing historian Nicola Wilson and is published on 1 February 2023. Sarah Waters has described the book as a "fascinating piece of queer literary history" and a "deeply feminist work, a celebration of courage and nonconformity.? "Patricia Duncker believes "Mary Gordon?s story of two women who chose each other, and a life of freedom will conquer every heart." For Jana Funke, Chase of the Wild Goose is a "remarkable example of queer feminist modernist writing" which "honours the Ladies as queer feminist ancestors whose unequivocal commitment to freedom and bold defiance of social expectations continues to resonate across the ages." The Times Literary Supplement celebrates the book as a ?wildly idiosyncratic account of two feminist pioneers?, stating that ?this new, helpfully presented and well-conceived edition repackages Gordon?s book for the twenty-first century.? Ab Nicola x Dr Nicola Wilson Associate Professor in Book and Publishing Studies, University of Reading Co-director of the Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing Co-director of the Modernist Archives Publishing Project Strand editor, 'Women, Publishing, and Book Culture', CUP Elements series on Publishing and Book Culture My most recent publication is a collaboratively-authored article, available open access: 'Digital Critical Archives, Copyright and Feminist -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lurid Editions are delighted to announce the publication of Mary Gordon?s homage to the Ladies of Llangollen, Chase of the Wild Goose.
