[Vwoolf] Susan Standford Friedman

She was such a generous presence--the perfect combination of an important
critic who made a genuine contribution to the field--of modernism, of
feminist literary criticism, of Woolf studies, of globalizing
modernism--and who was unstintingly generous to others.

I vividly remember sitting across a long table with her at MSA Pittsburgh.
We both notices the anxiety of a graduate student, perusing the menu. I
conferred with her briefly and she proposed that all grad students at the
dinner should order whatever they wanted, and we would divide the bill
among those who had travel budgets that would reimburse us. It was the
right thing to do and she did it immediately and with grace.

That's just one of many dear, fond memories I have of her. She was so much
fun and so kind and so curious and excited to learn something new--always
enthusiastic about a new author or idea. It was a thrill to be in her
presence.

Stay well, everyone,

Anne
