Kissing the Floor is a radical retelling of the Antigone myth. Set in Depression Era America, the play investigates the relationships among a set of siblings, all survivors of their family?s agonized, infamous legacy. Annie and her disturbed and disturbing brother, Paul, are knotted together by fate and a tortured love as their sister Izzy and their brother Eddie look on with dismay and all too much understanding. Clive Bell was a pivotal member of the Bloomsbury Group. His marriage to Vanessa Bell and his, at times tempestuous, relations with his sister-in-law Virginia Woolf form important strands in the cultural history of modernism. A tireless champion of modernist art, a committed pacifist and conscientious objector, Bell produced a huge body of correspondence with many of the leading artistic and political figures of his time. His lively, witty, highly opinionated letters are a window into the turbulence of the early twentieth century, populated by friends and acquaintances including T. S. Eliot, Katherine Mansfield, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, as well as his Bloomsbury friends, Desmond MacCarthy, Leonard and Virginia Woolf, Duncan Grant, Maynard Keynes, Roger Fry and Vanessa Bell. Arranged in eight categories ? Bloomsbury Circles; Virginia; War; Arts and Letters; To the Editor; Francophile; Travels; Love, Gossip, Home ? this selection emphasises Bell?s enormously varied life and interests. Born in the reign of Queen Victoria and living long enough to have been able to hear the Beatles on the radio, these letters demonstrate that Bell?s appetite for art, for love and for peace never flagged. _______________________________________________ Vwoolf mailing list Vwoolf at lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/vwoolf -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She is looking for an expert on Mrs. Dalloway to serve as a guide to their edition of that book. If interested, please contact her directly?not me! See below Gretchen Gerzina ?Audrey is an audiobook app where classic novels and short stories are paired with an expert guide and an illustrator. The guide creates a series of notes that are delivered after each chapter (or story) to help the reader learn about the book, author and historical context, but also to slow down and reflect on the book and its themes in a more meaningful, nourishing way. The guide also provides chapter recaps and character descriptions. We are looking for new guides who have in-depth knowledge of a certain book, author or era (mostly books in the public domain, for rights reasons), and feel confident sharing that knowledge in a digestible and accessible way. If you are interested, I recommend downloading the app and having a look around to get a feel for what we do ? https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.listenwithaudrey.com__;!!KGKeukY!yWrHyb60Un2BaNTsRZdt0ksTDy_BZ6hUnQvuVZqGZTFxHofxO8tRZgLOWAak3KoJbVUb4w0zjb1r_kk$ ? and then get in touch with me, Lucy Rand: lucy at readwithaudrey.com Thank you so much, I look forward to hearing from some of your co-Virginia Woolf experts! She was an amazing scholar and generous mentor to so many scholars and students. She held the Virginia Woolf Professorship in English and Women's Studies at University of Wisconsin. Some of you may remember the keynote she gave at the 17th annual conference on Woolf at Miami U. One of the most remarkable things about Susan was that despite her scholarly acumen and her stature as one of the preeminent scholars of modernism, she always always had time and attention to give to younger scholars and students. I said this once to her face, and I am glad that I did, that I often would think about life and professional goals and would think "when I grow up I want to be like Susan Stanford Friedman. Then I know I will have done something for the generations who come after me." I still feel that way, although the world has lost a luminary and I grieve for her loved ones and former students. Dear all, I learned about Susan many years ago when she was working with Rachel Blau DuPlessis on a book on H.D.. I had been cataloging H.D.?s letters at the Rosenbach Library in Philadelphia. I later met Susan at many meetings, the last one in 2019 at the ?Recycling Woolf? conference in Nancy, France; we were at the same hotel, recognized each other, and spent lots of time together. I was to be the second speaker, but a change of venue, and how we entered the auditorium, led to my falling off the stage and spending 6 hours in the hospital. After that, Susan and I had many meals together, and since she was working with the keynote speaker? Kabe Wilson? I got to spend lots of time with them. I gave my paper the next day , going from a panel of two to one of four, so I was cutting as I was speaking. Susan, who knew my paper from earlier conversations, asked a crucial question, for she realized that I had left out a key point in my conclusion. Her question enabled me to state what I had left out. It was amazing! As everyone has already noted, Susan?s support and generosity was clearly enacted at my panel. She absolutely saved me, and my paper, on that difficult day. What a great loss for everyone. I vividly remember sitting across a long table with her at MSA Pittsburgh. We both notices the anxiety of a graduate student, perusing the menu. I conferred with her briefly and she proposed that all grad students at the dinner should order whatever they wanted, and we would divide the bill among those who had travel budgets that would reimburse us. It was the right thing to do and she did it immediately and with grace. That's just one of many dear, fond memories I have of her. She was so much fun and so kind and so curious and excited to learn something new--always enthusiastic about a new author or idea. It was a thrill to be in her presence. Her memory will be a blessing.
