[Vwoolf] Gloomsbury on the Internet Archive

In the Philippines they have lovely screens
To protect you from the glare
In the Malay States there are hats like plates
Which the Britishers won't wear
At twelve noon the natives swoon
And no further work is done
But mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun

Thanks, Sarah and Stuart!

And hmmm! I did not know that the term for that sort of a shade is "coolie." I was taken aback to see the word but it's certainly commonplace:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.lampshadesolution.com/blogs/news/what-lamps-are-best-for-coolie-shades__;!!KGKeukY!1rEJyjtQCZomrvH9hs9QJyjfjS0C0UcAlNsSKGetoULEkmY6qV_RRpXBAQOaCDcM1qb4whF03k6rS8Lw8avxn8HL6YJNTPYALQ$

Since "coolie" is considered offensive in many contexts (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolie__;!!KGKeukY!1rEJyjtQCZomrvH9hs9QJyjfjS0C0UcAlNsSKGetoULEkmY6qV_RRpXBAQOaCDcM1qb4whF03k6rS8Lw8avxn8HL6YIZS2qTIw$ ), I wonder why it's still used so casually. The usage is contested in a reply to the post I have shared below where the blogger is asked why she didn't transition to a neutral term after saying "coolie" was derogatory:
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.heatherpetersondesign.com/blog/2017/03/obsessed-coolie-shades.html__;!!KGKeukY!1rEJyjtQCZomrvH9hs9QJyjfjS0C0UcAlNsSKGetoULEkmY6qV_RRpXBAQOaCDcM1qb4whF03k6rS8Lw8avxn8HL6YLso-yyJg$ .

Having rummaged about online, I notice that almost no one in charge of lampshade terminology is considering a substitute to avoid usage of a racist/classist term. The word Oriental also comes up frequently...but contesting it might just be "political correctness" (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-tsuchiyama-oriental-insult-20160601-snap-story.html__;!!KGKeukY!1rEJyjtQCZomrvH9hs9QJyjfjS0C0UcAlNsSKGetoULEkmY6qV_RRpXBAQOaCDcM1qb4whF03k6rS8Lw8avxn8HL6YJ84xeYPA$ ) (the article is from June 2016 when we were in a different universe).

p.s. the difference between the "coolie" and "Empire" shade styles is explained here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://thesavvyheart.com/tapered-empire-coolie-lamp-shades/__;!!KGKeukY!1rEJyjtQCZomrvH9hs9QJyjfjS0C0UcAlNsSKGetoULEkmY6qV_RRpXBAQOaCDcM1qb4whF03k6rS8Lw8avxn8HL6YLiozFJjQ$

Thanks, Vara. Gloomsbury highly recommended. Not so the Daily Mail's idea of Bloomsbury style, which is like a slightly ethnic version of Laura Ashley. One of the links in the article is https: //bloomsburyrevisited. co. uk/ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍

But the artist only does lampshades.

Greetings,

I have just discovered that 31 episodes of Gloomsbury are now accessible (at least in the USA) as an audiobook (see link below). This may have been previously shared; if so, my apologies for posting it a second time.

Also, I was sent a Google Alert on Bloomsbury style that might be of interest (visually, at least, but not necessarily as an inspiration for redecorating your home):
