Thanks Danell! This is so interesting. Vol 8 (2002) of Woolf Studies Annual
published Merry Pawlowski's edition of letters between VW and Vera Douie
about the Women's Service Library (later renamed the Fawcett Library),
mentioned by your colleague.

All the best,

mark

I thought folks would be interested in a few letters and documents from the
British Museum archive: Virginia Stephen asking for a reader's ticket,
Thoby's letter of support, and the dates she renewed her ticket. I was
surprised that she appeared to stop going in 1907 and mentioned it to the
archivist who replied:

It's also worth mentioning that it wasn't that unusual for someone who was
well-known to the library staff to be admitted without any formal
documentation. But I've asked a colleague here, who investigated Virginia
Woolf's presence here and he states this:

Mentions of the Round Reading Room in Virginia's personal writings seem to
decrease after 1930. It is difficult to say whether Woolf stopped her
regular visits (archival records don't show attendance) or simply she
stopped recording them. Virginia loved visiting the British Museum, a place
that transmitted her "a whole state of mind" (Woolf 1977-1984, III, 321);
however, other libraries offered different services or more specialised
collections, so it is possible that, for the last decade of her life,
Virginia preferred to do her professional research in the London Library or
the Women's Service Library instead.

Enjoy!
