[Vwoolf] FW: New Bloomsbury Set Grant

Hi Graham. I think this question has come up on the list before, so apologies for not finding those replies. I’ve usually thought ‘set’ is echoing Matthew Arnold’s derogatory remark about Shelley and his circle (“What a set!”), but then again (as I point out in my biography of Clive Bell), Lytton Strachey in April 1910 asked Duncan Grant if he had heard that “the Bloomsbury set” (referring to VW, Vanessa, Clive and Adrian) had gone to the coast.

Thanks for sharing, Mark! Sounds like a wonderful initiative. 

 

I would be interested to know what the thinking is behind using the (less common and often slightly derisory) term “Set” here over the usual “Group”.

 

I suppose given the purpose of the initiative, the term “group” absent of context might imply something more circumscribed and less porous than “set”.
