Interesting. It looks sweeter than most portraits of Woolf—something about the eyes—and also younger than I’d expect for that period, though it’s even harder to tell age from a painting than from a photograph!

Dear everyone,
Thanks for sharing this. I agree that it captures spirit rather than likeness; the Duncan Grant painting, if even by Grant, is so palpably not Woolf. It looks like a very poor interpretation of Mansfield, if anyone I can think of. Candis, it should be Stephen and not Stevens.
Now I'd like to know more about both Darbour and Ferguson! Best to all, AM

Hello, would it be possible to obtain the right to use this portrait of Virginia Woolf in a “for family-only” book about my grandmother, Helen Ferguson and her beautiful works of art? I’ve attached the foreword that I wrote, which includes the manner in which I would like to use this beautiful portrait.
Hopefully,

I think it's a wonderful interpretation of her spirit. And I'd be willing to contribute some pennies, Kristin!

I wanted to alert you to this newly discovered oil portrait of Virginia Woolf by the French painter Marguerite Darbour (1865-1940).

[Darbour_woolf_portrait_artwork]

Painted c. 1920s
Oil on canvas. 28.5 x 23.5 inches.
Signed and inscribed with title to the revere.
Provenance: The Artist’s Estate; Private collection, Nice

An extremely rare and hitherto unknown portrait of Virginia Woolf from life by the French painter Marguerite Darbour (1865-1940). The work was most likely painted on one of the Woolf's many visits to France during the 1920s and 30s. The portrait remained in a private collection in Nice, France until recently. Marguerite Darbour (1865-1940) exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants from 1903 and became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1922. She specialised in portrait and landscape subjects and had studios in Paris and Cassis.

The Court Gallery are offering the work for sale at £16,500.

Kind regards,

Denys Wilcox
