One of the (several) causes of Clive Bell’s deciding he could no longer live at Charleston, as he told Duncan Grant in 1963, was pain from his unhealed surgical wounds caused by bumping along the deeply rutted track to the house ….

Thanks Vara (and Mark), an interesting point. Of course the Daily Telegraph's mistake repeats the (to me abhorrent) convention of subsuming any married woman's identity into that of her (presumed) husband.

Related to Charleston and Lord Gage (but not to recent paving of a road or the distribution of funds) is a photo of the first page of Chapter 28 "Clive Agonistes" in Part V of Mark Hussey's Clive Bell and the Making of Modernism. As Mark documents, in an article from The Daily Telegraph (2 September 1931) about an earlier Lord Gage's marriage, Vanessa's married name is wildly misattributed (see the underlined phrases).
