Outside/rs 2022 conference will be held 1 and 2 April 2022 and is a hybrid of in-person, at the University of Brighton, and online sessions. The conference will explore sex, gender, and queerness at the margins of society. The title, of course, resonates with Woolf's 'Outsiders' Society'. Delegates will have the choice of attending online or in-person. For those who exist in queer, marginal, or dissident relations to normativity in its various guises, the 'outside' is a familiar place. As Virginia Woolf famously noted, to be locked out of or barred from spaces of privilege was, and still is, a common experience for women. And it is also a common experience for queer, trans or LGBTQIA+ people, as well as BIPOC communities, disabled and neurodiverse people, working class and colonised populations, and many others. The conference is designed to platform postgraduate researchers and community groups. We welcome postgraduate researchers to submit papers on a topic or author of their choice that is relevant to the above issues. Please pass on this information to your students who may be interested in attending the conference or submitting a paper. Please send abstracts of 300 words to outsiders2022 at gmail.com. Papers will be reviewed anonymously so include personal information i.e., name, institutional affiliation, in your submission email only. We would like to draw your attention to the panel on Queer Bloomsbury. This will be an online panel on Friday, 1 April and will comprise of three presentations (20 minutes each) followed by a half hour discussion/Q&A. The panel will include Madelyn Detloff (Miami University), Jane Goldman (University of Glasgow) and Samson Dittrich (University of Sussex) and will be chaired by Marielle O'Neill (Leeds Trinity University). We could appreciate it if you forwarded this information to any students or colleagues who may be interested. We welcome everyone to attend. All of you are invited to "Aspects of Britain", which takes place 10 a.m. - noon PST, on Saturday, January 15, 2022 via Zoom. The symposium honours the occasion of Peter Stansky's 90th birthday. Cambridge historian Peter Mandler will chair the symposium, featuring discussions of William Morris by Elizabeth Miller; Bloomsbury and Virginia Woolf by Regina Marler and Marielle O'Neill; and George Orwell by John Rodden and Christopher Angel. These are the scholarly interests of Peter Stansky, who is Frances and Charles Field Professor of History, emeritus, at Stanford. Elizabeth Miller is a distinguished William Morris scholar; Regina Marler has written extensively on Bloomsbury and Virginia Woolf. Marielle O'Neill is doing pioneering work on political aspects of Virginia Woolf. John Rodden has published ten books on George Orwell. Christopher Angel, an eminent figure in the film world, is writing the script for a George Orwell movie, based on Peter Stansky's work. As Mark documents, in an article from The Daily Telegraph (2 September 1931) about an earlier Lord Gage's marriage, Vanessa's married name is wildly misattributed (see the underlined phrases). Because of the persistent uncertainty surrounding COVID, and especially in the wake of recent travel disruptions and other factors, I have decided to move this year's Woolf conference online. This was a very hard decision because I was eager to see many of you in person and to welcome you to Texas. However, the benefits of settling this uncertainty now outweigh the slim chance that we might be able to meet in person. I hope that an online conference will make it easier for a wider group of Woolfians and Woolf-curious folks to participate in the conference, including people hesitant to travel for health reasons, people without institutional funding to support travel, and international participants. I am excited about designing a fabulously engaging online event for all of you. To allow time for folks to shift gears in response to this change, I am extending the abstract submission deadline to February 15. Please consider proposing panels, workshops, or other forms of collaborative conversation around shared interests, as well as individual papers. The updated call for papers can be found here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/cfp/2021/06/18/online-virginia-woolf-and-ethics-the-31st-annual-international-conference-on-virginia__;!!KGKeukY!nnRE5HFl3_cV9bAmjjfc1eN87aSTVNyFFUdFWzuldmueIRhVsLVVdxZb8hQCB-UhqP4$ Virginia Woolf and Ethics 31st Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf June 9-12, 2022 Lamar University (online modality) The 31st annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf takes as its theme "Virginia Woolf and Ethics," and aims to promote conversation about the topic across disciplinary boundaries. We hope to explore Woolf's engagement with specific ethical issues in her writing. These may include, but are not limited to, war and pacifism, human rights, human-animal relations, environmental ethics, bioethics, fascism, empire, patriarchy, racism, and bigotry. The theme also suggests a reconsideration of Woolf in relation to various ethical approaches. For instance, participants may wish to read Woolf's thought in conversation with care ethics, narrative ethics, moral psychology, moral imagination, moral luck, virtue ethics, deontology, utilitarianism, communitarianism, liberalism, religious ethics (Christian, Quaker, Jewish, Buddhist, Indigenous, etc.), or other moral theories or concepts. Papers might address the moral philosophy of Woolf's milieu, including the thought of Russell, Moore, or Leslie Stephen. Participants may wish to consider Woolf's thought with continental theorists such as Levinas, Derrida, Foucault, Irigaray, Kristeva, Badiou and others who address ethical concerns. We invite participants to consider Woolf in relation to broader ethical considerations, such as the relation of ethics to reading practices (or to literature); ethics of teaching, scholarly community, and academic life; secularism, religion, and/or mysticism in Woolf's thinking; and reading Woolf as an ethical (or social or political) theorist. What might a Woolfian ethic look like? How might we read Woolf's aesthetic practices in ethical terms (eg. narrative indeterminacy and the cultivation of certain forms of attention, moral imagination, or empathy)? How does Woolf navigate competing demands of justice, individual liberty and rights, and collectivity and social responsibility, in her fiction and non-fiction? Papers on members of the Bloomsbury Group and other associates of Virginia Woolf in relation to the conference theme are also appropriate. We welcome proposals for papers, panels, roundtables, and workshops from scholars, students, artists, and common readers from all backgrounds and fields. Abstracts of maximum 250 words for single papers and 500 words for panels, as well as questions, should be sent to Virginia.Woolf at lamar.edu by February 15, 2022. For accepted proposals, we ask that presenters make their access copies available electronically. The conference welcomes proposals for presentations in languages other than English to foster a more open exchange at this international conference. Yet while no longer taboo, illness remains an unpopular theme in literature. In her essay, On Being Ill Virginia Woolf asks whether illness should not receive more literary attention, taking its place alongside the recurring themes of "love, battle and jealousy". This book, On Being Ill, does exactly that. This edition serves as a complement to HetMoet's 2020 publication of the first Dutch translation of Virginia Woolf's On Being Ill. The subtle complexities of Woolf's essay will no doubt continue to be resonant for a new generation of readers today. In this collaborative volume, authors, translators and illustrators have come together from Great Britain, Ireland, the United States and the Netherlands to represent past, present and future thinking about illness. Noteworthy contributions to this edition are Deryn Rees-Jones' preface to Woolf's essay from 1926 and the introduction to Audre Lorde's The Cancer Journals of 1980. Against these, the voices of contemporary authors resonate as they contemplate the interactions between sickness and literature. Readers are able to begin the book at the end, or might happily start in the middle, as every contribution is a unique, personal piece which offers poignant observations of the world of illness from within. Writing, as well as reading, about illness, is a form of love. 'Considering how common illness is...it I strange indeed that illness has not taken its place with love, battle, and jealousy among the prime themes of literature' - Virginia Woolf 'To believe yourself, your body and that your pain is real, is a radical act of self-care' - Jameisha Prescod 'Being ill stills time' - Deryn Rees-Jones 'Representing a diagnosis -- in art, words or photos -- is an attempt to explain to ourselves what has happened, to deconstruct the world and rebuild it in our own way' - Sin?ad Gleeson 'Writing about illness is a form of love' - Lucia Osborne-Crowley 'For years I've been echoing the opinion that nurses should receive higher salaries, but I had never seen with my own eyes just how hard nurses work' - Lieke Marsman On Being Ill Virginia Woolf, Deryn-Rees Jones, Lieke Marsman, Lucia Osborne-Crowley, Mieke van Zonneveld, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, Nadia de Vries, Jameisha Prescod, Sin?ad Gleeson and Audre Lorde.
