Point well-taken.  I am very aware that "Anonymous was a woman" was not Woolf's actual wording.  My book records the entire passage exactly.  When I say "Anonymous was a woman," I mean it as a paraphrase of what Woolf said, and I thought that would be obvious to the people on this list.  In anything I write for print I will make it clear if I am paraphrasing.  Thanks for your helpful comment, I would be a very poor quotation compiler indeed if I messed up on this.

This is a major revision of the first edition, which was named by the Wall Street Journal as the second most essential of all reference works.
