In her essay "Joseph Conrad," written on Conrad's death and first
published in 1924, Woolf quotes from the French Lieutenant's
conversation with Marlow in /Lord Jim/. One bit of the Frenchman’s
comment that she does not quote, as reported by Marlow, is: "'I have
rolled my hump (roulé ma bosse),' he said, using the slang expression
with imperturbable seriousness, 'in all parts of the world . . . '"
