I just happened to read this (again) by John Gross in the “New Statesman” of 31 Dec 1965:
“Judged by everyday standards, Virginia Woolf must look a marginal figure for all her splendid gifts. In his history of modern England, A. J. P. Taylor delivers a practical man’s verdict: her novels ‘are irrelevant for the historian’. Perhaps.”
Absolutely standard stuff for 1965.
