All three programs provide early career support (i.e., the first years after receiving the doctoral degree) for researchers from groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical sciences. An intent of these awards is to provide "a sustained period of protected time for intensive research career
development under the guidance of an experienced mentor." The three programs each address a different research career track:<br><br><div style="margin-left:40px"><b>NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award to Promote Diversity (K01) </b>(<a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-15-064.html" target="_blank">http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-15-064.html</a>): "Candidates for this award must have a research or health-professional doctoral degree or equivalent. Candidates with clinical degrees (e.g., MD) may wish to consider the NCI
Mentored Clinical Scientist Award to Promote Diversity Award (K08) and
candidates interested in patient-oriented research may wish to consider
the NCI Mentored Patient-Oriented Research to Promote Diversity Award
(K23) as more appropriate alternatives relative to their stage of
development and career goals."<br><br><b>The NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K08)</b> (<a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-15-060.html" target="_blank">http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-15-060.html</a>): "Candidates for this award must have a clinical doctoral degree. Such
degrees include, but are not limited to, the MD, DO, DDS, DMD, OD, DC,
Phar.D., ND (Doctor of Naturopathy), and DVM. Individuals with the PhD
or other doctoral degree in clinical disciplines such as clinical
psychology, nursing, clinical genetics, speech-language pathology,
audiology or rehabilitation are also eligible. Individuals with a clinical doctoral degree interested in pursuing a
career in patient-oriented research should refer to the NIH Mentored
Patient Oriented Research Career Development Award. demonstrate competence in clinical activities, must document a serious
intent for a research career in patient-oriented clinical oncology, and
must document sensitivity to cultural issues impinging upon the practice
of medicine among the major U.S. ethnic populations.
Candidates for this award must have a health-professional doctoral
degree. Such degrees include but are not limited to the MD, DO, DD.S,
DMD, OD, DC, PharmD, ND (Doctor of Naturopathy), as well as a doctoral
degree in nursing research or practice."<br></div><br></div><div>For all three Mentored Career Development Awards, the grant provides $100,000/year for salary and $30,000/year for research development costs for up to 5 years. research support for the initial 3 years of the first independent
tenure-track faculty position, or its equivalent. Appropriate K22
applications are expected, but not required, to address problems that
are pertinent to cancer health disparities and the biology, etiology,
pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, control, and/or treatment of human
cancer." <br><br></div><div>The grant provides $100,000/year for salary and $50,000/year for
