University Office of Outreach and the Engagement and the Engagement
Scholarship Consortium are co-sponsoring a one-day series of three
mini-workshops on May 22 from 9 am–4 pm in Hale Hall, 154 W. 12th Ave

"Building Capacity for Outreach and Engagement Scholarship" includes
three 2-hour sessions to enhance capacity for creating and strengthening
university-community partnerships and promoting engagement scholarship
through teaching, research and service. Registration is limited to 50
participants per session, and participants may register for one, two, or

<br><div style="margin-left:40px">The Foundation encourages proposals that are judged likely to
significantly advance the chemical sciences. Examples of areas of
interest include (but are not limited to): the increase in public
awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the chemical sciences;
innovative approaches to chemistry education at all levels (K-12,
undergraduate, and graduate); and efforts to make chemistry careers more
attractive. Research proposals are not customarily considered.<br></div></div><div><br></div><div>Initial inquiry letters are due June 5, and proposals are due August 18. No funding limit is specified, but current grant recipients have awards ranging from $6500 to $100,000.<br>
<br></div><div><b>3) NSF General & Age Related Disabilities Engineering (GARDE):</b> The GARDE program "supports fundamental engineering research that will lead to the
development of new technologies, devices, or software for persons with
disabilities." Garde also supports undergraduate engineering design projects (<a href="http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501021">http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501021</a>):<br><p style="margin-left:40px">
...especially those that provide prototype "custom-designed" devices or
software for persons with disabilities. These projects are designed to
enhance the education of undergraduate engineering students.
Undergraduate engineering design projects to aid persons with
disabilities include:</p><div style="margin-left:40px">
</div><ul style="margin-left:40px"><li>A design experience for the engineering student that will directly aid a specific individual with a disability.</li><li>Undergraduate student engineers or engineering technology students develop prototype "custom-designed" devices and software.</li>
<li>The PI and the students work with institutions providing care or education for individuals with disabilities. </li></ul>
Proposals are due October 31, 2014. Undergraduate Engineering Design Projects are typically funded at $25,000 per year for three to five years.<br><br><b>4) <span class="">NIH</span> <span class="">Science</span> <span class="">Education</span> <span class="">Partnership</span> Award (SEPA) (R25): </b>The next round of the National Institute of Heath's SEPA program (<a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-14-228.html">http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-14-228.html</a>) <a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-10-206.html" target="_blank"><span class=""></span></a>is coming up. <br><div style="margin-left:40px"><span><span></span></span>The goal of the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program is to invest in educational activities that complement or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. SEPA encourages interactive partnerships between biomedical and clinical researchers and P-12 pre-service and in-service teachers (Teachers), schools and other interested organizations. SEPA supports diversity in the workforce by providing opportunities for students from underserved communities to consider careers in basic or clinical research, provides teachers with professional development in science content and teaching skills and improves community health literacy through its science centers and museum exhibits. Applications that target P-12 or ISE topics that may not be addressed by existing school, community or ISE-based activities are encouraged. <br>

<br>Awards may be for up to 5 years and direct costs are limited to
$250,000 annually. Full proposals
are due July 30, and letters of intent are due "30 days before application due date."</div><br></div><b>5) NSB task force report:</b> A report has been released by National Science Board task force that solicited investigator and institution feedback about reducing investigators' administrative workload for federally funded research (<a href="http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsb1418" target="_blank">http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsb1418</a>). In regard to the NSF "Broader Impacts" merit criterion, the task force's recommendations (p. 69) include:<br>
<ul><li>Clarify requirements for the Broader Impacts criterion and integrate these requirements into the research description rather than isolating them in a separate section. </li><li>“Broader impacts” should be consolidated with “intellectual merit” to make a common total merit standard. </li>
