<div><b>1) NASA Opportunities in Education and Public Outreach for Earth and Space Science (EPOESS):</b> NASA has added an EPOESS program element to its omnibus ROSES-13 solicitation (<a href="http://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/solicitations/summary.do?method=init&solId={973EB03F-65A8-00E3-8AB7-9493D6A5BB44}&path=open">http://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/solicitations/summary.do?method=init&solId={973EB03F-65A8-00E3-8AB7-9493D6A5BB44}&path=open</a>). From the solicitation:</div>
<div><br></div><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px">This particular solicitation is focused on education and outreach activities in support of the SMD Earth Science, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, and Astrophysics Divisions. Proposals that address science learning needs across the Divisions are encouraged; however, proposals may target the content of a single Division (see Section 2.1 for an opportunity for Heliophysics specific proposals).<br>
<br>Projects may address any of the Project Activity Categories. In 2013, SMD encourages proposals in the following areas:<br> <br></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px"><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px">
• In the Higher Education Outcome, efforts that would strengthen the teaching and learning of science and engineering at the undergraduate level (including minority-serving institutions and community colleges) using SMD science content and mission data and efforts that would increase the number of underrepresented minorities with graduate degrees certified to teach in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines at the secondary level. Of particular interest are efforts that provide preservice K-12 and community college educators with research-intensive experiences on NASA Earth or space science projects.</blockquote>
<blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px"><br></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px">• In the Elementary and Secondary Education Outcome, SMD is particularly interested in efforts that provide systemic STEM professional development opportunities for middle school educators utilizing SMD education resources and science and mission data.</blockquote>
<blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px"><br></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px">• In the Informal Education Outcome, SMD encourages proposals that increase utilization of SMD resources in out-of-school time or after school programs. Participatory exploration efforts (e.g. citizen science projects) that utilize SMD science data are of particular interest.</blockquote>
<blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px"><br></blockquote><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px">• In the Outreach Outcome, SMD encourages efforts that introduce and engage students to STEM topics. Collaborations or partnerships with community-based organizations such as Parent Teacher Associations, amateur astronomy clubs, citizen science groups, business associations, etc. are particularly encouraged. </blockquote>

Notice of intent is due 4/8/13, and full proposals are due 5/23/13.</div><div><br></div><div><b>2) NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU):</b> NSF has released a revised solicitation for its REU program (<a href="http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517">http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517</a>). From the program synopsis:</div>
<div><br></div><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 40px;border:none;padding:0px">The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.</blockquote>
