I met with program directors at NSF last week and received a few updates:

1) NSF Discovery Research K-12 (DR K-12): Note this language in the new solicitation (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=500047):

All Full Research and Development Learning Strand projects must result in a usable product and indicate how the product could be adopted and directly support formal education.

The language in the previous solicitation seemed to indicate that a product could be a deliverable for a project. However, the lead program director indicated that under the new solicitation, Learning Strand projects should definitely result in a product (ex., a curriculum module) and that Assessment Strand and Teaching Strand projects will usually be expected to result in a product. If a project plans to study assessment/learning/teaching but will not result in a product, then it is more appropriate for the REESE program.

There will be an informational webinar about the DR K-12 solicitation,
probably at the beginning of November. (Remember that the Letter of
Intent is due November 17.) The webinar dates will likely be announced
in about a week.

2) NSF Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability (SEES): Matt Platz (currently on loan from OSU to NSF) will be speaking about the NSF-wide SEES initiative (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504707) on October 3 from 10am-noon in e100 Scott Lab. From the NSF synopsis:

SEES activities span the entire range of scientific domains at NSF and
aim to:
1) support interdisciplinary research and education that can
facilitate the move towards global sustainability;
2) build linkages
among existing projects and partners and add new participants in the
sustainability research enterprise; and
3) develop a workforce trained
in the interdisciplinary scholarship needed to understand and address
the complex issues of sustainability.

Programs funded under SEES include:

Sustainability Research Networks (SRN) ($12 million over 4-5 years) (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503645&org=NSF)

Sustainable Energy Pathways (SEP) ($500,000/year for up to 4 years) (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504690)

Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability Fellows (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504673&org=NSF)

3) You may recall that NSF announced earlier that at least part of the activities previously funded under the Research in Disabilities Education (RDE) and Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE) solicitations would be moved into the Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) solicitation. Whatever the new configuration will be, NSF anticipates releasing the solicitations very soon.
