<b>1) NIH Research to Understand and Inform Interventions that Promote the Research Careers of Students in Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences </b>(R01): A revised funding announcement has been released (<a href="http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-GM-12-002.html" target="_blank">http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-GM-12-002.html</a>). From the announcement:<br>
<div style="margin-left: 40px;">This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the
National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), National Institutes
of Health (NIH) solicits applications that propose research designed to test
assumptions and hypotheses regarding social and behavioral factors with the
aim of advising and guiding the design of potential interventions intended to
increase interest, motivation and preparedness for careers in biomedical and
behavioral research. NIGMS is particularly interested in those interventions
that are specifically designed to increase the number of students from
underrepresented groups entering careers in these disciplines. The proposed
research need not be restricted to underrepresented students. Comparative
research that analyzes the experience of all groups in order to place that of
underrepresented students in context and to learn whether and how
interventions should be tailored to make more underrepresented students
successful in biomedical careers may well be particularly illuminating and
is, therefore, encouraged.<br></div><br>Direct costs may be up to $250,000/year for up to 4 years. Letter of intent due Sept 21, with applications due Oct 21.<br><br><b>2) NSF Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE):</b> A revised RFP has been released (<a href="http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12819">http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12819</a>). From the program synopsis:<br>
<div style="margin-left: 40px;">Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) is an
NSF-wide program that supports international activities across all NSF
supported disciplines. The primary goal of PIRE is to support high
quality projects in which advances in research and education could not
occur without international collaboration. PIRE seeks to catalyze a
higher level of international engagement in the U.S. science and
engineering community.<br></div><br>According to the RFP, "the average award size is expected to be approximately $4 million over 5 years." Preliminary proposals are due Oct 19, and full proposals are due May 15, 2012.<br>
<br><b>3) NSF Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM):</b> A revised RFP has been released (<a href="http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5473">http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5473</a>). From the program synopsis:<br>
<div style="margin-left: 40px;">The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and
Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) Program seeks to identify outstanding
mentoring efforts that enhance the participation and retention of
individuals (including persons with disabilities, women and minorities)
who might not otherwise have considered or had access to opportunities
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The
awardees serve as leaders in the national effort to develop fully the
nation's human resources in STEM.<br clear="all"></div><br>Awards are made at both the individual and organizational level and include $10,000. Proposals are due Oct 5.<br><br>-- <br><p>Christopher <span><span>Andersen</span></span><br>
