We have a late topic swap for this Friday. In the department meeting yesterday, Sara raised an issue on behalf of the graduate students that the department isn?t doing a great job of creating a reasonable balance of different work priorities and/or in supporting students finding ways of navigating those demands. It was suggested that some of the questions are subfield dependent, so we?ll talk through what that looks like for us all. I?m sure we?ll have individual advice for each other, but also let?s think about structural or community-level shifts we might like to see.

I'm surprised to see that they expect me to buy a computer with the startup, especially since I heard from folks in both departments that they got their computers from a separate fund... How do you think I should address this? Especially since in theory negotiations are over... Here's what I'm thinking:

Thank you so much for sending me this contract. I have a couple clarifications after reading the specifics.

Since customarily primary work computers are not included in startup costs and I had been told by a few faculty from within the PSU departments that the cost of an initial computer comes from a separate fund from the startup, the amount that I asked for for the startup did not take into account the cost of a computer. Is there room for adjustment to account for this difference, perhaps either by raising the startup to $20,000 or allowing for the cost of my initial computer to come from the separate fund mentioned in the contract?

And lastly, seeing the benefits is great and helpful, but I can't seem to find information on the amount of the healthcare premium covered by the university vs. employee. Do you have this information or could you direct me to somewhere where I can find it?

Thanks again for your work on this, and I'm looking forward to signing the contract once we have these details cleared up.

Abstract

Every scientific enterprise has, as we know, far-reaching implications beyond its own somewhat circumscribed conclusions. Linguistic research intersects on the one hand with issues of language identity and language ownership, and on the other hand with political issues and language planning. I plan to share with you in this talk part of my work on the grammar of Guarani, informed by my studies of its five centuries long contact with Spanish, and how even a "purely scientific" description of the language needs to come terms with these larger issues.
