We chat a bit until we don?t feel like chatting anymore 3. We skip So Mean this week and take a nap or catch up on a thing we need to do Please let me know in email which you?d prefer. I?d prefer not to inflict reading on you at the last minute, so Important Topics should be the reading-free variety. Also, if you have readings for the translanguaging day next week, though, please send them! I think some of you did that early in the semester and I?ll grab those, but now is the last chance to chime in on that. -K Kathryn Campbell-Kibler Associate Professor Department of Linguistics Ohio State University campbell-kibler.1 at osu.edu she/her -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One of the most important conceptual innovations in the field in recent years has been translanguaging, which is the process of sense-making of bilingual individuals. This course explores the theoretical development of language mixing from a sociolinguistic perspective, looking at earlier work on code-switching and the role of L1 and linguistic repertoires in language classrooms. It explores how translanguaging work is part of the ?bilingual turn? or ?languaging turn? in applied linguistics, and considers the theoretical and practical implications of translanguaging in relation to issues of identity, ideology, pedagogy, and language acquisition. This will likely wander into the conversations about prioritizing our research and the challenges of having the important stuff be the long-term stuff. Especially for those of us whose brains have more of an ?I do what I want; you?re not the boss of me? relationship to our executive function.
