This position has an expected Time and Effort (T&E) involving all aspects of the Land-Grant mission and will be approximately 50 percent research, 30 percent extension, 20 percent teaching. The final T&E will, however, be aligned with the strengths of the individual selected for the position. Strong candidates will leverage high quality research and/or extension in plant sciences with emphasis given to pioneering approaches in controlled environments (CE) and interest in plant biofortification. These approaches will support Oklahoma producers and communities.</p><p style="letter-spacing:0px;line-height:1.43!important;color:rgb(45,45,45)!important"><b>Responsibilities:</b></p><p style="letter-spacing:0px;line-height:1.43!important;color:rgb(45,45,45)!important">The successful candidate will be expected to participate in original and collaborative multidisciplinary research program in specialty corps, support ongoing crop production capacity building programs, develop extramurally funded research projects that integrates basic and applied horticulture with crops grown in modern and urban agriculture setting such as greenhouses, vertical and rooftop farms, high tunnels, and other controlled environments utilizing soil-based, hydroponic and other soil-less technologies.</p><p style="letter-spacing:0px;line-height:1.43!important;color:rgb(45,45,45)!important">While the position requires a focus on plant production in controlled environments, the best candidates will be open minded and willing to participate in research that involve exotic, non-traditional crops, such as those grown in other parts of the world and may not yet be popular locally. Basic and/or applied research may include CE, broad biofortification approaches, genetic and/or physiological manipulation of plant-product quality components such as nutritional value, flavor, fragrance, color, or other merging areas. <span style="font-family:Helvetica,sans-serif;color:rgb(9,9,9)">Sprouting Farms and the Mingo County Redevelopment Authority are partnering to develop and operate an Aquaponics Production and Training center located in Kermit, West Virginia.
This project is funded by the WVDEP and US OSM Abandoned Mine Land Pilot program and is expected to begin operation in early 2020. Aquaponics is a system in which the waste produced by farmed fish supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in
turn purify the water. Our greenhouse will produce over 150,000 heads of fresh lettuce and over 20,000 pounds of fresh tilapia each year. Our aim is to operate the facility sustainability and employee 3 to 5 full-time staff. Additionally, we hope this operation
can become a production model that can be replicated across Central Appalachia and build our ability to provide healthy and nutritious local food to our communities. Our facility, once fully operational, will implement an education and training program and
invite would-be farmers, school groups, and others interested in learning about running an aquaponics operation. We look forward to working within the community of Kermit and becoming an entity that West Virginia and Mingo County can be proud of!<u></u><u></u></span></p>

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about growing food sustainably in Appalachia. Our ideal candidate will have a background in horticulture, plant science, aquatic systems, and greenhouse management, and will be looking to apply their skills and experience
in a new environment. Great people skills are an important part of the role – we’re a small team and you’ll be responsible for ensuring all aquaponics staff are working effectively for both supervised and unsupervised tasks. You will be involved in both the
plant and fish elements of the farm, and although it will not be essential to have experience in fish farming, ideal candidates should be will be willing to learn. We are looking for someone who will join the team and grow with us. It is important that you
share our organization's values and are prepared to work hard to deliver a high standard of work. Additionally, our ideal candidate will learn how our social enterprise works and be intimately involved in the business management; and be part of moving the

The Operations Manager will be responsible for the daily production of any and all vegetables and fish produced in the aquaponics greenhouse. All operations will be done in accordance with the HACCP and food safety plans, strict biosecurity measures, and standard
operating procedures. Along with the daily duties mentioned above, the Operations Manager will be responsible for all record keeping within the greenhouse, including but not limited to, plant and harvest data, fish life stage, water quality data, and water
use data.<u></u><u></u></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0in 0in 7.5pt;font-size:12pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;line-height:24px">
<strong><span style="font-family:Helvetica,sans-serif;color:rgb(9,9,9)">Specific Responsibilities will include:</span></strong><span style="font-family:Helvetica,sans-serif;color:rgb(9,9,9)"><br>
● Follow daily, weekly, monthly, and as-needed checklists for routine system maintenance.<br>
● Plan and assist with cleaning and general maintenance associated with the entire aquaponics system.<br>
● Make employment recommendations on hiring, improvement plans, transfers, promotions, corrective actions, terminations, pay adjustments, etc.<br>
● Coordinate and manage the work of employees by directing members of the team to meet goals. Internally audit regularly to ensure standard operating procedures are being adhered to.<br>
● Planning of all seeding and harvesting activities.<br>
● Ensuring that all farm activities are carried out in line with Standard Operating Procedures and health and safety requirements.<br>
● Providing regular Farm Operations reports to the management team.<br>
● Staff Training.<br>
● Conducting Farm Tours.<br>
● May require some weekend work and evening work depending on the season, system condition, and harvest requirements.<br>
● Ability to lift 50 pounds.<br>
● Quarterly reporting back to the Board of Directors and Management team on progress and targets.<u></u><u></u></span></p>
