Charlie Shultz finished his second trial for<br>
evaluating four types of grow lights (LED,<br>
Metal Halide, Induction, and Fluorescent)<br>
on various crops under aquaponic<br>
conditions. Trial one with Bibb Lettuce was<br>
recently completed nearly one month ago.<br>
Trial two also consisted of four individual<br>
systems (reps) with four light options<br>
(treatments) using Nile Tilapia and Basil.<br>
Each system consisted of approximately<br>
three square meters of plant growing area<br>
and fish were supplied 180g of feed daily.<br>
At this rate (60g of feed per square meter<br>
of plant area per day) nutrient production<br>
from fish waste and uptake from plants<br>
remained in balance during the trial. The<br>
four week basil grow-out trial was finished<br>
August 1, 2013.<br>
Basil production data will be compared by<br>
treatment and an energy analysis will be<br>
conducted to evaluate the energy costs of<br>
growing indoor aquaponic crops.<br>
The harvest weights of the Nile Tilapia was<br>
also recorded from all four systems.<u></u><u></u></span></p>
