In 1983, he and his family started converting a former poultry farm into the world?s first indoor salmonid fish farm using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The use of solar heating and low energy consumption has also made it the longest running commercial RAS facility in the US. Nutrient recovery from effluents used to raise produce such as melons and peppers was included from the beginning and led to being a pioneer in Aquaponics. These efforts have been expanded in recent years to testing and developing new plant components for Aquaponics indoors in the fish barn, in greenhouses, and in outdoor planting beds. A 19-acre site is under development adjacent to the original fish farm as the R.A.I.N.B.O.W. Project (Reutilizing And Integrating Nutrient Byproducts Of Wastewater). Eco-restoration with native plants and pollinator beds, control of invasive plants, and beneficial insects for pest control is underway. Propagation of native water plants is a new priority for sale to water garden and remediation projects. The farm is open to the public for visitations and purchases of pond stocking fish, aquatic plants and pond equipment. Future programs include day camps and other educational efforts, as well as event rentals and wedding venues. *Role Description* This is a full-time on-site role for a Botanical Manager located in Urbana, OH.
