RESEARCH
Atlantic Salmon Strain Evaluation
UWSP NADF and partners at the USDA Agricultural Research Service National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center (NCWMAC) in Orono, Maine are evaluating two Atlantic salmon strains utilized for commercial aquaculture production, the St. John's River strain and Gaspe strain.

Traditionally, the St. John's River strain has been selected for growth in net pens for four generations (fish on the right in above photo), while the Gaspe strain (fish on the left in above photo) has been selected for growth in freshwater systems for two generations. To evaluate performance, both strains of fish are being raised to market size in semi-commercial freshwater RAS at UWSP NADF and NCWMAC. Understanding how various Atlantic salmon strains perform in freshwater RAS will provide data to the industry on growth rates, processing traits and early maturation, with a goal to advance the production Atlantic salmon raised in RAS to support the sustainable production of local seafood. DEMONSTRATION
Intensive Production of Walleye for Aquaculture
UWSP NADF is currently investigating commercial production spawning cycles using out-of-season spawning practices to control the reproductive cycle of walleye irrespective of the season, a project funded by Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute. Through photothermal manipulation, the facility has produced eggs, fry and juveniles from the intensively raised broodstock at the facility, comparing fecundity, growth, survival and developmental milestones of the fry and fingerlings.

After the data is collected, walleye fingerlings have been available to various interested parties including private industry, researchers, or educational facilities. The facility has plans to continue this research to investigate walleye broodstock management and intensive fingerling production. If you are interested in raising walleye intensively please let us know by contacting our Facility Operations Manager, Tyler Firkus at tyfirkus at uwsp.edu<mailto:tyfirkus at uwsp.edu>.

EDUCATION
Aquaculture Education and Literacy
Tours are interactive and educational, showcasing facility, projects, species and systems. The facility also offers local classroom visits to help incorporate aquaculture and aquaponics to K-12 schools. Too far from Bayfield? The facility also offers virtual presentations. The facility can also provide technical tours and assistance to industry if requested.

For more information, contact Emma Hauser, UWSP NADF Aquaculture Outreach Specialist: ehauser at uwsp.edu<mailto:ehauser at uwsp.edu>

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Summer Internships 2022
The UWSP NADF has hired two interns for the summer of 2022. Bode Rasmussen is currently enrolled at Vermilion Community College in the Natural Resources Technician program. Collin Bretting is enrolled at University of Minnesota Duluth for a bachelors in business administration and management.
Bode and Collin are both heavily involved in all facility research and demonstration projects including managing walleye broodstock, raising Atlantic salmon and learning techniques and best management practices for egg collection, water reuse systems, incubation and larval systems and flow-through systems.

Any undergraduates interested in a summer internship experience at the facility, please contact Emma Hauser, UWSP NADF Outreach Specialist: ehauser at uwsp.edu <mailto:ehauser at uwsp.edu>

STAFF HIGHLIGHT
Past Technician Accepts Position at Red Cliff Tribal Hatchery
Robert Lawrence, former aquaculture technician at the facility, has accepted a position with the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as a Natural Resource Technician, which includes working with the Tribal Fish Hatchery.

The facility offers University Staff Temporary Employment (USTE) opportunities to promote aquaculture workforce development. These positions provide intensive hands on aquaculture experience to recent graduates to be placed within the industry. The facility has nearly 100% job placement for these students, as they gain experience in a variety of rearing systems that culture both cool and cold water fish species at all life stages.

"UWSP NADF was an amazing experience and has given me valuable skills and knowledge. This experience has greatly helped start my career out of school and was a fun place to work at. My new position is at Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa as a natural resource technician where I am responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hatchery as well as raising coaster brook trout in a RAS system."

IN THE NEWS
World Aquaculture Magazine Highlights UWSP NADF
"Located near the shores of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin on property owned by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Native Americans, the facility has been operational for almost 20 years. The location was carefully chosen on the basis of important geological attributes related to topography, aquifer capacity, water quality and effluent management."

Learn more about the facility history, current research and educational projects and more in an article published in the World Aquaculture Magazine in their June 2022 issue.

CALL OUT TO AQUACULTURE FARMERS
Project Looks to Enhance Fish Processing Opportunities for Farmers
A project funded by the North Central Regional Aquaculture Center (NCRAC) is looking to:

  * Identify farmers who are interested in processing their fish and therefore willing to attend a 2-day Seafood HACCP certification training. Location of the farmers will determine how many training sessions and where to hold the trainings. Training cost will be paid by the NCRAC project.
  * Encourage farmers after the training, to move forward with processing to develop a product. The farmers will play a key role in helping to identify local processing facilities such as a seafood processing facility, commercial kitchen, butcher shop, restaurants etc. interested in renting out space for fish processing. The project team will work with the farmers throughout the project to develop a product and a market.

Please reach out to Kwamena Quagrainie, Department of Agricultural Economics, Purdue University with questions or interest: kquagrai at purdue.edu<mailto:kquagrai at purdue.edu>.
